DVB receivers make it possible to receive digital television. Rooftop or indoor antenna users need a DVB-T receiver, while cable customers need to use a DVB-C model. Owners of DVB-S receivers use a satellite dish with a universal LNB, which gives the widest selection of programmes.

Those who want to receive digital TV via antenna, cable or satellite and don't have a flat-screen TV with an integrated DVB-T, DVB-C or DVB-S tuner need a separate TV receiver. DVB-S receivers have the largest selection of programmes on offer. Furthermore, and in contrast to the use of DVB-C, reception via DVB-S or the optimized DVB-S2 standard does not have associated running costs, and as an added bonus, it does not rely on transmission towers or cable networks, requiring just a satellite dish with a universal LNB. Channels in HD resolution can be received via DVB-C or DVB-S/DVB-S2, but due to lack of bandwidth, HDTV reception is not offered yet via DVB-T. To bring free and encrypted offers to the screen, a TV receiver with a CI or CI+ slot or a model with an integrated smart card reader is essential. Some TV receivers offer an integrated hard disk or the ability to connect an external USB stick if you want to record shows and benefit from time shifting. With a dual receiver, also known as twin tuners, a channel can be recorded while another one is playing. Also, more and more manufacturers provide Ethernet jacks, so you can connect the receiver to the net. Some of these devices can also retrieve HbbTV content from the Internet.
