Projectors

LCD projectors are cheap, compact and have good legibility of text and graphics. Tube projectors on the other hand, have a greater life and work pixel free, but are very expensive. DLPs, priced in between, provide a strong image but opacified shimmering shades of gray. LCOS projectors are a little sharper. More...

TrustedReviews

On test: SIM2 Grand Cinema C3X Lumis Uno
"Back in March we lapped up SIM2's truly stellar Grand Cinema C3X Lumis three-chip DLP projector - arguably the single most enjoyable home cinema experience we've ever had. There was just one problem: if we even dreamed of owning one, we'd have to wake up and apologise to our bank managers." Review details: Single test. "Over the past year or so, JVC has had the Midas touch with projectors. But it isn't resting on its laurels – the '950 got another praise-littered review in January, and now we've got our hands on its little brother, the '550." Review details: Single test.    Test results

"Around this time last year, we went walkabout with the first truly pocket-sized projector: Optoma's PK101. And frankly, once we'd seen past the allure of its design, we were underwhelmed. The thing just didn't chuck out enough light to actually do anything useful." Review details: Single test.    Test results

TrustedReviews

On test: JVC DLA-HD990
"On paper, JVC's HD990 looks like it might be a hard sell. Not because it doesn't look likely to be much cop; chances are it will be very good indeed, in fact. But rather because it costs the best part of £2,500 more than JV's already outstanding HD950, while only delivering what appears from the spec sheet to be a mere incremental advance, rather than the considerable leap we might have hoped for." Review details: Single test. One projector was reviewed and rated on design, features, image quality and value.    Test results

"HEAD OVER TO whathifi.com and you'll see a clean sweep of four-star Epson projectors. Yes, they're four-star - 'very good' - reviews not five but undoubtedly plenty of manufacturers would relish that sort of consistency and quality. Will the company's £3000 EH-TW400 keep the company's end up?" Review details: Single test.    Test results

Projectors

Those who want to show pictures or videos to a larger group of people, don't usually look to a screen, but to a projector - with this transforming a large canvas or a white wall into the screen. Relatively soon after its introduction, the LCD projector emerged as a genuine bestseller. They are relatively cheap, offer a sharp demarcation of the pixels, good legibility of text and graphics and are compact in designed. The disadvantages, however, are the sharply defined pixel structure, which can interfere with colorful pictures, and the subsequent costs, because the LCD lamps last only a short time and are very expensive. More suitable for continuous operation are tube projectors. The light-producing bulbs have almost five times the lifespan of LCDs. Another advantage is the pixel free working, making pictures look a little more natural if a little blurred. However, the price of tube projectors is very high. An alternative may therefore be the DLP projector. It works with electrically controlled, tiltable mirrors - each of which depicts an image point. DLP projectors are priced between CRT and LCD projectors. Their picture is more severe and has a stronger contrast than that of LCD projectors. Since the DLP mirrors know only the phases "on" and "off", colour differences must be produced through an appropriately pulsing switch - which could result in flickering and fuzziness in various shades of gray. New on the market are LCOS projectors, which are similar to DLPs, but deliver sharper pictures. The LED Beamer technology is likewise still very young. It possesses the highest life span, however, the projector is relatively faint and only suitable for smaller surfaces.
