"Gear4 BluPhones - Bluetooth Headphones & Headset"
Published on: 4/2008
On test: Gear4 BluPhones
Bluetooth is quickly becoming one of those ubiquitous technologies that you can find in almost anything. Be it mobile phones, laptops, GPS devices, MP3 players, printers and anything else that doesn't spring immediately to mind, if something is small-ish and portable, there's a good chance you'll find Bluetooth inside. That goes for headphones and even earphones as well, especially with music phones and MP3 players increasingly embracing wireless audio using the A2DP audio profile.
Looking back we've reviewed a few such products in the last year or so, including the iSkin Cerulean F1 Bluetooth Earphones, the Etymotic Research ety8 Bluetooth Earphones and a little longer ago the Logitech FreePulse Wireless Headphones, but none have quite done enough to secure an unqualified recommendation. Unsurprisingly, the et8 Bluetooth Earphones got the closest, but a typically high price and the unfortunately bizarre appearance dented their appeal.
Gear4's effort looks promising on first appearance.

Wireless Headphones
Headphones are small speakers that, as opposed to earphone, fit around the ear, often with a headband, and allow the user to listen to music or other audio without disturbing anyone in the immediate vicinity or indeed being disturbed by them. Alongside traditional wired headphones there is a wide range of wireless headphones which function using either radio frequency transmissions, infra red, or over bluetooth. Infra red headphones are the least useful as a direct line of sight between the wearer and the transmitter must be maintained at all times. RF headphones are available in both analogue and digital forms, digital offering the best sound quality and the least interference. For both types of RF headphone there is no need for a line of sight and they can function through walls and floors to afford the wearer a greater degree of flexibility and freedom. Digital headphones are a bit costlier than analogue models. Wireless headphones offer respite from the spaghetti junction of cables around most people's computers and televisions and for most people, the background noise and interference does not present much of a problem. The drawback is the need for batteries but with most high quality sets the headphones can be charged from the transmitter when not in use.
