Information about the category

With their flexible, adjustable focal lengths, wide-angle zooms provide the ability to capture wider viewing angles than the human eye can perceive. Good lenses are expensive. In the price range from £400 onwards, lenses can be found that provide automated image stabilization, minimal aberrations and good contrast.

Wide-angle zooms are wide-angle lenses which have a flexible adjustable focal length. As a rule, focal lengths between 12 and 24 millimeters, 16 and 35 millimeters or 24 and 70 millimeters are used. There are also so-called "travel zooms", which cover a huge range with their 28 to 200 millimeters, so that all the focal lengths from wide angle to telephoto are covered in a single zoom lens. The focal length in this case indicates the distance between the front of the lens and the focal point of the light rays inside the lens. The increased field of view means that the shorter the focal length, the smaller the subjects are depicted. But this also means that, with short focal lengths, the contents of the picture appear elongated as a result. A wide-angle zoom lens is a particularly appropriate first choice for confined spaces, since despite the cramped distances, a lot of space can be fitted into the picture. Furthermore, wide angle zoom lenses have a very good depth of field - even wide open at their maximum aperture. They are thus suitable for wide-angle zoom expansive landscapes or group portraits. The zoom capability of such lenses is highly variable and can be used to effectively replace several individual lenses. However, this implies a high build quality, as wide-angle zoom lenses are among the most expensive ever. Therefore, it is assumed that low cost wide angle zooms will present aberrations. ED glass and aspherical lens elements, which produce lots of detail and good contrast, can be found in lenses from £400 upwards. Good lenses nowadays even offer image stabilizers which can compensate for up to four steps of exposure and allow for longer exposure times. In addition, diaphragms consisting of many rounded blades help out-of-focus backgrounds look more natural.
