Web Browsers

The browser, also called a ''Web browser'', is a computer programme which is primarily used to view HTTP web pages, but can now also be used for FTP sites and, in some cases, for browsing local disk drives. The two main types of web browser are text based or graphical web broswers, in which the emphasis is on pictures, bright links and colour. Text based browsers, however can also cope with HTML and XML and are especially good for the blind, since all the information can easily be converted to speech. In addition they are fast and light and perfectly suited to research as annoying pop ups and distracting advertising do not get shown. The graphical browser on the other hand interprets the HTML-Code while retaining all formatting information and images. This is also how films and animations are displayed. Graphical browser are available for all operating systems with a graphical user interface and are consequently the most popular. Some Web browsers were beginning to include yet further functions in their base feature set however this trend is waning as the focus turns to speed and low resource usage. Even portable devices such as mobile phones and PDAs include some form of web browsing software and are thus fully capable of accessing the internet, albeit in a somewhat stripped down form. Microsoft Internet Explorer is the most widely used as it ships with all windows based PCs as a standard and integral component of the Windows operating system. Some of its competitors include the Mozilla-Project, Opera, Mosaic and the Safari browser developed by Apple. These are usually available freely on the internet.
