USB - Memory stick

A USB flash drive is a small storage device that plugs directly into a computer's USB port and requires no drivers or installation. Following naming conventions among computer users, these are also known as Memory Sticks but also as thumb drives, USB or Memory Keys or as pen drives. Many USB flash drives try to incorporate more functions, for instance, a built in MP3 Player, dictaphone. watch, radio or small camera, but the main function of mass storage device always remains the same. The size of a USB memory stick can range from as small as a lighter, to as small as a large lighter and storage space can reach as high as the theoretical maximum for NAND flash chips. Currently, some of the largest USB flash drives can hold more data than a DVD. USB drives commonly use the USB 2.0 interface and can offer speeds of up to 10MBps. They are also a lot more robust than previous forms of data storage. Unlike floppy discs, USB memory can not be erased or corrupted by a magnet, they are usually housed in tough shells and can withstand quite some force, unlike CDs and DVDs and are small enough not the get damaged when dropped. It is thought that solid state flash memory will eventually replace other types of storage, especially for use in MP3 players for instance.
