Information about the category
TFT televisions are LCD televisions in which each pixel of the screen is supplied with its own transistor. This means that every pixel is individually controllable and provides for higher picture quality and bigger screens. TFT screens are, for all intents and purposes, flicker free and have pretty good colour representation. Their main weaknesses lie in the contrast ratio and brightness. LCD panels can not create their own light, they are merely a filter and rely on backlight which is either fluorescent or from LEDs. Screens with an LED backlight are usually brighter and better quality. Another drawback is the narrow viewing angle. When seen from the side, the nature of LCDs cause the image to become dim or even black, new technology has all but nullified this problem but it something to think about if buying a second hand or old screen. Many high end devices also include a pivot function, this can turn the screen to vertical and is a nice touch for people who use the screen to view photographs in portrait mode for instance. Prices for TFT televisions are higher than CRT but they should last about three to five times longer which makes them not a bad investment. Also the prices are constantly falling which makes them a more and more attractive purchase every season.
