"TFTs: 17-19in"

PC Pro
Issue: 11/2007
On test: HannsG HW173AB, Maxdata Belinea 1970 S1-P, Iiyama ProLite E1902S, Acer X192W
If evidence were needed that the 17in TFT is being usurped by its 19in brother, this month provided it: when given the choice, only two manufacturers offered to send a 17in TFT for review, while we had to pare down the surplus of 19in offerings.    More

Widescreen monitors are fast becoming the ideal alternative to the standard LCD monitor. The more natural viewing space they offer gives users a better perspective and more screen estate.    More

"NEC 175VXM+"

Issue: 3/2007
On test: NEC MultiSync LCD 175VXM+
If you're building a budget PC, a standard 17in LCD such as NEC's 175VXM+ should do the job.    More

There's not much to look at, as far as the lengthily named LCD175VXM+ is concerned. It comes in a pure white colour, with a round, tilting base, and VGA, DVI and audio input connections.    More

TFT-Monitors 17''

Ultra thin, no emissions and flicker free – there are many reasons to opt for a TFT monitor, and now price can be added to that list. A 17” LCD screen will set you back around one hundred to one hundred and fifty pounds and for that you will gain about 60% more desk space and a lower electricity bill. A 17 inch monitor will have a display resolution of 1280 x 1024 pixels and support a digital input. This is important as were the signal to go through an analogue – digital conversion process, much of the quality would be lost along with some of the benefits of having such a screen. For playing games watch out for a low response time. This is the time taken for a single pixel to change colour and should not be less than 8ms to avoid ghosting or smearing of the image. Also the brighter the better is a motto to live by when choosing a flat panel display. 200 cd/m2 is the minimum tolerable, any lower and the display will be hard to see in a brightly lit room as it will be swamped by the lights. A good contrast ratio is better for viewing films, contrast ratios of around 400:1 are common. This shows the difference between the darkest and brightest parts of the image.
