"Cables are to some people what garlic is to vampires, but in the world of home cinema they're a necessary evil, particularly when rigging up rear speakers in a 5.1-channel set-up. However, there are ways to stop those bothersome wires cluttering up your living room. We live in the age of the 2.1-channel system, where real rear channels are sacrificed in place of virtual surround technology, allowing them to integrate more easily into your living environment." Review details: Two Blu-ray soundbars were reviewed and rated. No final scores were awarded.    Test results

Surround Sound Systems

The most important part of any surround sound system is the speakers. These will be five in number plus a subwoofer for bass. Two of the speakers are mounted in front of the listener and two to the rear, the centre speaker is best placed closed to the television or screen and, due to the fact that the human ear can not locate especially low sounds, the subwoofer can generally be placed anywhere in the room. The smaller front and rear speakers can usually be mounted to the wall, this saves space and allows them to be positioned to optimally recreate the surround effect. A surround sound system will comprise of the speakers, a radio tuner, CD and DVD player and a remote control. An output power of 50 watts per channel is usually more than enough for a living room. If the device is to be deployed anywhere else, or will be used in halls or outside, go for a higher power rating.
