On test: Apple iPod touch 3G (64GB)
"Apple’s iPod Touch is essentially an iPhone with all the phone functions ripped out. You would be forgiven for wondering exactly what the point of such a gadget might be, but in practice it’s an extremely impressive and handy device." Review details: Single Test    Test results

On test: Archos 2 (8 GB)
Among MP3 players, Archos largely is known for its video playback. The Archos 2 though, with 8GB storage will be decidedly known for its cheap price. Undercutting and over-speccing the nearby competition, is this the cut-price MP3 player of 2009? Review details: Single Test. One MP3 player was reviewed and rated on design, and features, sound quality, usability, value and video quality.    Test results

On test: Microsoft Zune HD
Placing the Zune in direct opposition to Apple's iPod touch, Microsoft's Zune HD is a touchscreen version of the original. With OLED screen HD radio and video, along with Internet Explorer as new additions, the original features also remain. Review details: Single Test    Test results
"Samsung Q1 music and video player"

Published on 11/2008
On test: Samsung YP-Q1
Samsung's MP3 players have been moderately impressive with a fair turn of style going some way to counter-acting the lack of anything stand-out. The latest line, including the Q1, seem to suggest that sound is where Samsung hopes to separate its players from the rest of the herd with support for FLAC and OGG Vorbis as well as a number of audio enhancement technologies and comprehensive sound shaping tools and preset equalizer settings. Portable Media Players

Portable Media Players are an evolution of the MP3 player, which while retaining the main function of music playback, throw the extra benefits of video playback and picture viewing into the mix. It may not seem all that appetising to view movies on the 2” screen on many devices, but the best will come with the option of a direct connection to a television giving you the option of viewing your videos on the big screen.

When looking for a PMP the size of the hard drive is very important, there is no use in having a device capable of playing back music, video and photos when all you can fit on it is one music video and a picture of your dog. 20GB should really be looked at as the bare minimum and will let you keep a couple of albums and even full movies and television shows in your pocket.

With the larger screen, battery life can be an issue, but thankfully PMPs can often provide just as much power for music playback as a standard MP3 player. The previously undisputed king among MP3 players is the iPod, but Apple has yet to introduce a fully video capable player, the closest it has yet come is the 5th generation video iPod and the iPhone, which many consider to be the best way of getting video on an iPod.

PMPs have a slight price premium over straight MP3 players but some come with some extra features such as wifi connectivity or card slots that would be too large to integrate into a smaller MP3 device.
