A Smartphone is the next step up from a mobile phone. It is essentially a combination of a mobile phone and a computer. The latest Smartphones are powered by Windows Mobile 6, a version of the Windows operating system especially built for the job. All the standard phone features are on offer, but, thanks to WM6, a Smartphone is far more powerful. Typically, users can email, text message, page, get access to the web, play MP3 files, watch videos and even perform office tasks with Word and Excel.

E-TEN says the X600 is its smallest PDA to date. Certainly at 107mm tall, 58mm wide and 14.7mm thick it is small, and at just 136g it is light too. This is the kind of PDA you should be able to drop into a pocket and forget about it.

Mobile phones are taking on more and more multi-media functions and developing into true all-rounders.

Today, a mobile phone without a camera is a rarity and MP3 support is also on the increase both to allow the use of MP3 ring tones or (for mobile phones with larger memory or memory card support) to allow for their use as an MP3 player.

Mobile phones of this type can either be used with headphones or music can be played out of the built in speaker. Doing this will not produce a very good sound quality or loud volume but is a popular method among young people who want to share their taste in music with friends, random passers by and fellow commuters. Radio support has also been implemented by some manufacturers and new digital standards are set to make this even better, with more stations and better reception. It is possible that in the future the digital camera, the MP3 player, the address book and hand held games console will all be replaced by one unit. Current battery technology suggests that this will remain just a dream for at least the near future, but if things keep improving at the pace they are at the moment, dedicated MP3 players will have their work cut out for them.
