Product information and further reviews for VoIP Phones
US Robotics Cordless Skype Dual Phone Personal Computer World 4/2007 - US Robotics' Skype-certified dual phone enters a crowded market where there’s little opportunity to differentiate between products.
Mobile Phone VoIP Software Head to Head TrustedReviews 3/2007 - Voice over IP (VoIP) is really catching on at home and in the office and there are plenty of providers you can choose from to deliver the service. But VoIP has yet to really make its mark with mobile phones. Until very recently it has had no chance at all because mobiles have lacked built in Wi-Fi. But that is changing, and higher end handsets are beginning to include this (finally). We are talking mostly Windows Mobile and Symbian based handsets here, and in the latter camp Nokia in particular is pushing Wi-Fi in its E series of smartphones designed primarily for professional users, and its N series for high end consumers. So, with one key technical barrier beginning to shift itself out of the way, what else remains? Well, to use Voice over IP you need access to a wireless hotspot, or even your own wireless network at home or at work. To use a wireless hotspot you’re going to need to access it via a browser, so you can see why this is limited to the more feature rich, smartphones. Review details: Two VoIP packages for mobile phones were reviewed and rated based on features, performance and value for money. Scores ranged from 7 to 8 points out of 10.
US Robotics Cordless Skype Dual Phone Computer act!ve 3/2007 - The success of Skype – the software that allows users to make cheap telephone calls over the Internet – has created a small army of add-ons and accessories aimed at the millions of people now calling all over the world. There are dozens of phone handsets that work with Skype, but the US Robotics Cordless Skype Dual Phone is more than just a Skype phone.
Trendnet ClearLink TVP-SP2 Computer Shopper 3/2007 - TrendNet's ClearLink TVP-SP2 is a Skype speakerphone that's good enough to use in a small meeting room.
Group test: IP phones on test Personal Computer World 7/2006 - IP phones are designed to plug into a network with an internet gateway, using the standard Ethernet connection. Once set up, with an account from a VoIP (Voice over IP) service provider, they are ready to make calls via the internet, without a host computer. Those new to VoIP may believe these calls are free and that IP telephones should be functionally identical to a standard landline phone. Most people start off using a USB phone or headset plugged into a PC, but after a while they get fed up with having to have the PC switched on all the time just to make calls. An IP phone usually has its own built-in web server, which means it can be plugged straight into an internet-connected network with no need for a PC at all. Review details: Six internet phones were reviewed and rated based on features, ease of use and value for moeny. Scores ranged from 2 to 4 points out of 5.
Review: Vonage Wi-Fi Phone GadgetCenter 6/2006 - Thanks largely to the likes of Skype, most of us are pretty familiar with the concept of Voice over IP (VoIP).
US Robotics Internet Speakerphone internet telephony Computer act!ve 5/2006 - Manufacturers are becoming ever more inventive in their range of headsets and handsets that cater for the increase in internet telephony. To this end, US Robotics have produced a small device that unites both functions in one, with their Skype compatible Internet Speakerphone.
Actiontec VoSKY Call Center TrustedReviews 3/2006 - The world of telephony has changed for better in the last few years. First mobile phones swamped the market, giving people a real choice over how to make their phone calls for the very first time. And now voice over IP (VoIP) is threatening the world of fixed line phone calls from an entirely different angle. Skype, Google, Vonage and a whole raft of other Internet phone software, hardware and service providers are taking advantage of the fact that broadband has finally taken off, and offering customers the opportunity to bypass the traditional PSTN (public switched telephone network) entirely.
Us Robotics USR809600 Computer Shopper 6/2006 - Skype might be brilliant for making phone calls over the internet, but it doesn't feel right if you have to use a PC headset. US Robotics' USR809600 is a USB phone for use with the service. It feels comfortable and it's just like using a decent mobile handset.
Recommended by our readers More information about Voice over Internet Protocol can also be found at voip-service-review.toptenreviews.com. Send us more suggestions for helpful sites.
Voice over Internet Protocol is a new way of staying in contact with friends and family by utilising the extra bandwidth of an internet connection to make voice calls, much in the same way as an instant messaging programme allows with text-based chat.
The explosion in popularity VoIP has experienced can be clearly seen in the fact that it has been only three short years since the first beta release of Skype (arguably the biggest name in VoIP services) to the release of wireless, hardware-based handsets being sold in Tesco stores in the UK.
The quality of a VoIP call will depend on the speed of the internet connection, the compression algorithm used and the distance between callers. Drawbacks of VoIP include problems with lag and jitter. This means that each party may have to wait an uncomfortable amount of time before their voice is relayed. Other drawbacks include the fact that as a VoIP phone relies on either a computer or mains power and a router, in the case of a power-cut, the VoIP service will be unavailable. A normal fixed-line phone will not suffer this same fate as power is supplied over the telephone lines and backed up by generators and batteries at the telephone exchange.
Of course, these failings aside, VoIP remains a tempting prospect for many owing to its very cheap local and international call prices. Another great aspect is free calls between VoIP users, these remain free no matter where in the world the callers may be and as hardware solutions retain user information, they can be plugged into any computer or used on any wireless network to make cheap calls at any time and in any place.
Handsets cost as little as £20 and call plans for free local, national, international and customer to customer calls start from under ten pounds.
