Information about the category

Headphones are small speakers that, as opposed to earphone, fit around the ear, often with a headband, and allow the user to listen to music or other audio without disturbing anyone in the immediate vicinity or indeed being disturbed by them. Alongside standard earbuds, wired headphones and wireless headphones, there are also surround sound headphones. Surround sound headphones, as opposed to normal stereo models, have not two but eight speakers built into the ear pods to deal with centre, front, rear and low frequencies. This, understandably, makes them quite large but manufacturers try and make them as comfortable and light as possible and so the wearer is seldom aware of them being there. They will come with an integrated surround processor or a will need to be connected to a 5.1 sound card and can accurately reproduce the surround sound effect from DVD films and games to offer a more immersive experience that is possible with just standard stereo headphones. Critics complain that the speakers are two small to offer adequate volume in the bass range and too little definition in the higher frequencies. For a really good set of surround sound headphones either expect to shell out quite a bit of money or expect to be disappointed.
