Information about the category
Hand-held vacuum cleaners are designed for cleaning small surfaces. Therefore, under no circumstances can they replace a normal household vacuum cleaner, since they can't, for example, clean floors as conveniently and accurately. The fact that their suction power is lower is actually not a drawback. Designed for quick suction, these handy devices usually offer good filter performance and take up much less space that conventional tube vacuums. They are the perfect household helper for quick house or car cleaning. However, their action radius is limited by the fact that due to their rigid construction and reduced intake they're not suitable for less accessible places such as under the sofa. Households with animals would also do well to use a hand-held vacuum cleaner as a flexible second device to remove unwanted marks or to clean cages or sleeping places. The biggest advantage of handheld vacuums is therefore their flexibility, especially for battery-powered models, due to their compact design that lacks a long suction tube. The suction tube, the engine-filter unit and the handle are in fact directly linked to one another. Depending on their weight, hand vacuum cleaners are also suitable for walls or ceilings, for example for removing cobwebs or to suck dust from the curtains. Most normal hand vacuum cleaners use micro filter dust bags, which of course must be replaced frequently due to their low capacity. However, smaller devices usually don't require a bag, but are emptied directly in the trash can. For allergy sufferers, in turn, models with washable HEPA filters are recommended. There are also models which can operate without a filter bag and use a so-called cyclone filter instead. In them the intake air is sucked into a rotating plastic container and the dirt particles are secreted by the centrifugal force. This also saves the cost of filter bags.
More Information
When buying a battery powered hand vacuum cleaner, care should be taken that a charger is included, so that the batteries can be recharged. Additional accessories are also useful for vacuuming furniture or curtains, and the sucking intensity also should be adjustable according to body size. Handheld vacuum cleaners with a suction power of 250 watts or above are enough to achieve good cleaning results, with current models peaking at 450 watts.
