Review: Netgear ProSafe FVS318G VPN firewall V3.co.uk 2/2010 - With a completely overhauled design and the addition of Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) networking capability, the new FVS318G is far more than just a minor refresh of NetGear's FVS318 entry-level VPN firewall router.
Wireless threats meet their match IT Week 10/2007 - AirTight Networks’ SpectraGuard Enterprise (SGE) version 5.5 wireless intrusion prevention system is excellent for testing and maintaining the security of wireless networks. Among the new features in this latest version is a location-based policy management system, which is designed to make it easier to manage geographically dispersed SGE deployments. This is also intended to help managed security service providers to provide wireless security for different organisations. Another key addition is integrated support for Cisco’s Wireless LAN Controller systems.
Clearswift MIMEsweeper CSW250 PC Pro 9/2007 - When Clearswift launched its MIMEsweeper for web security appliances last year, we brought you an exclusive look at its entry-level CSW250, and were sufficiently impressed to place it on the A List. However, we did note that user authentication was conspicuous by its absence, and with its latest update - with, confusingly, the same name - Clearswift remedies this oversight and adds a few more choice features as well.

Information about the category
The economic damage caused by viruses, worms and other malware is immense. Effective protection which can intercept these pests before they infect your system is essential. On the other hand, if there is already malware on the system, it must be denied unauthorized Internet access. Therefore, it is worth investing in a so-called hardware firewall. Almost all modern DSL routers have such functionality nowadays, since they must act as an interface between a computer network and the Internet. In these routers, the functions of protective firewall and PBX for establishing a broadband connection are linked to each other. Wireless routers, which create wireless connections and connect physically separate computers to one another, are especially popular these days. However, wired variants are more secure, because radio networks represent a security risk in themselves. A hardware firewall generally has the task of filtering traffic between a network and the Internet, allowing or rejecting data requests according to its configuration. Unlike software solutions, a hardware firewall doesn't run on your own computer, so it doesn't slow your own system down. However, pure hardware firewalls can't protect against viruses and malware themselves, just against their attempts to take control of your computer. Individual users in particular should therefore use also free anti-virus software on their computers for protection. Hardware firewalls also offer additional features, such as protection against "denial of service" attacks (DoS attacks). Such attacks consist of persistent requests which "overwhelm" a computer and cause it to stop responding. Additionally, hardware firewalls prevent PCs on the network from making illegitimate requests to the Internet, for example, if the computer is already infected. Well-featured hardware firewalls also provide networking features such as the ability to use DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) or NAT (Network Address Translation) servers. In short, a good hardware firewall acts as a router for the network, as an Internet interface and as a shield against attacks.
