"Helios X5000 Network Media Player"

On test: Helios X5000
Media Center PCs have been around a while now, and there's no better all-round tool for recording, watching, listening to music and downloading media. But not everyone has the cash to go out and buy or build a second PC to put in their AV rack, and it isn't always the greatest idea if you want the ultimate in quality or reliability either. The alternative is to buy a network streamer so you can access downloaded and ripped video and music stored on your PC while still being able to play your CD and DVD collection. But at this point most people's AV racks would be creaking, and again that issue of quality is always likely to raise its head. I haven't yet seen a dedicated network streamer that's capable of matching a decent DVD player for quality, and the same goes for music playback. Helios thinks it has the answer.

"Linksys KiSS 1600"

On test: Linksys KiSS 1600
Your PC is likely to be stuck in a study but filled with video, audio and photo files that could be enjoyed with friends and family. Media streaming devices like the Linksys KiSS 1600 let you use your home network to access media files, so you can listen to MP3s, browse last year's holiday photos and watch downloaded video files on your TV and / or hi-fi, operating everything from your armchair with the remote.

Media streaming is the Holy Grail of home entertainment. People have been searching for it for a while now but no one has managed to find the device that actually delivers what we need. Apple TV looks good and has a slick interface but the lack of material for it renders it little more than an expensive waste of electricity. We've seen other players that offer snatches of brilliance but there has not yet been the killer product that others have to copy. KiSS has probably done the best job in the market, and has been making DVD players with media streaming capabilities for a lot longer than anyone else. Its latest offering promises a lot but does it actually deliver?

On test: Sonos BU130
We've reviewed the Sonos system in depth before, but this new 'bundle' package, the BU130, takes the price of entry down to just £700.
