"£1,000 camcorders"

MacWorld
Issue: 4/2007
On test: Canon HV10, JVC Everio GZ-MG 505E, Sony HDR-HC3, Panasonic NV-GS500EB-S
We're forever straddling platforms, either leaping to the latest or sticking with what we know. Mac OS X-wise, plenty will adopt Leopard when it makes an appearance, but there are those who haven't yet even been tempted by Tiger. Consumer-video technology platforms are warping, too, with high-definition (HD) and its enhanced image and audio resolution specs enticing folk currently equipped with standard-definition kit. Naturally, equipment manufacturers would like us to take up the new, and so HD camcorders are coming to market at less than £1,000 a throw, lining up against higher-end SD camcorders with their inferior resolution. So, when seeking to shoot some serious video, is it best to buy into the budget end of HD, or into the upper echelons of enthusiast-camcorder technology?    More

"JVC Everio GZ-MG505EK HDD Camcorder"

TrustedReviews
Published on: 9/2006
On test: JVC Everio GZ-MG 505E
JVC led the way with hard disk-based camcorders when it launched its Everio range back in 2004. But the format has taken a while to catch the public eye, and now Sony has entered the fray with its DCR-SR90 and SR100. So JVC needed to up the ante, and its answer is the GZ-MG505EK. Whereas the miniscule MC range had the three-chip MC500EK at its pinnacle, now the larger MG series has the MG505EK. It has almost identical optics to its tiny cousin, but in the larger G chassis.    More

Digital 8

Digital8 or D8 camcorders occupy a position between the analogue Hi8 format and the newer MiniDV digital format. Digital8 uses the same size tape as Hi8 (8mm) but records in a digital format. Digital8 is a more robust format than MiniDV and the picture quality is exactly the same. Another advantage of this format is its ability to digitize previous analogue Hi8 recordings, which made it perfect for those with a large collection of 8mm home movies. The Digital8 format, however is less developed and likely to be phased out as the popularity of MiniDV and DVD camcorders continues to increase. In any case, this was a format created and manufactured exclusively by Sony, which limits the availability of accessories. Digital8 cameras can be picked up for a little less than DV models but their lack of professional functions and lower resolution would lead all but the most budget concious consumer to opt for a MiniDV based camera insted.
