DAB Tuners

DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) radios promise to provide the listener with improved signal quality, more choice and a plethora of new features such as over the air information showing such things as playlists, current programme, and even links to artists' home pages and competition information.

The argument for better sound quality delivered over digital, is that it can theoretically exist only in two states, either on, or off. This is in contrast to analogue radio which can exist along a wide range of frequencies at varying quality, eventually tapering off into a sea of static. This idea is however, somewhat misleading as the quality of a digital audio stream will always depend on bandwidth, something that costs the broadcaster money and is therefore often shrunk down to the bare minimum required in order to either cram more stations onto the same multiplex or save on those costly resources.

DAB is however, not the only digital broadcasting system out there and is already being derided by opponents as old-hat and limited in scope. Newer (not yet available) technologies like DVB-H and DMB, which are specifically targeted at hand-held devices such as mobile phones and MP3 players can, according to publicity, carry video and multi-channel sound, in addition to the text and image-based extras which DAB offers.

DAB radios can range in price from less than fifty pounds for the most basic model to two hundred pounds for devices featuring MP3 or memory card support. These more expensive players also offset the increased cost by offering extra benefits such as timer recording and time-shifting as well as improved sound and aesthetics.
