There was a time when installing a home cinema system meant encircling your armchair with a ring of wooden cabinets, but with the move to flat TVs, much more discrete 5.1 systems have become the norm. These one-stop speaker solutions incorporate five satellite monitors that can be free standing or fixed to a wall and a subwoofer to handle the bass frequencies. We tried out four such systems that can deliver real home cinema thrills without clogging up your front room.    More

Sometimes, it's great to see a product that comes firmly from the 'no compromises' school of thought. These speakers are all about performance, and to that end they are as big as they need to be and as bold as they have to be.    More

Center Speakers

More and more people are taking up the challenge of converting their living rooms into true home cinema rooms, adding large screens, DVD players and surround sound speaker systems. A surround sound speaker set consists of six or more speakers, two for the front, two for rear, surround effect, a large subwoofer for low frequencies and a centre speaker. The centre speaker is usually positioned next to the screen and is responsible for playing back most of the dialogue and effects, therefore it is often slightly larger than the surround satellite speakers. As it is positioned next to the television it is imperative that it be magnetically shielded to avoid damaging the screen, this is less important with an LCD or plasma set. To achive the best surround effect all speakers should be ideally made by the same manufacturer and be placed at equal distances from the listener. Some people, wishing to create the perfect cinematic experience go so far as to use a sound level meter to make sure the volume coming from all speakers is the same. The positioning of the speaker is also important, if it is to be hung on a wall, it will have to be insulated on the rear so the sound is not reflected causing crosstalk and interference, the best way to have the speaker raised to ear height is to use a specialist Hi-Fi speaker stand. This is made to avoid any loss of sound through vibration and is usually heavily weighted by sand or other material.
