When the television was first introduced into people's homes, the case was often huge while the screen relatively small. According to manufacturers 'bigger is better' and for anyone who has been able enjoy their favourite film or experience all the drama of the match on a big screen while still benefiting from all the comforts of home, the sales pitch is finally found to live up to the hyperbole. Today the price of big screen televisions is continuously dropping and a screen over 32 inches is now well within the pocket of the average householder. An LCD or Plasma screen will offer the largest sizes in the smallest footprint, but there are some things to look out for when buying such a product. An LCD screen is available in sizes up to 42 inches but these are often a bit darker than their more expensive plasma cousins and are not as good at showing fast moving action or complex scenes. Plasma screens can also be made in larger dimensions, up to 60 inches for consumer models. Another method of achieving a larger picture is rear projection. Here the picture is projected onto the screen using a projector and system of mirrors, the picture quality is usually very good and with newer technology the depth can be as little as 7 inches. CRT televisions still boast the best picture quality and are cheaper than any other type of screen, flat or otherwise. CRT televisions are available in sizes up to 40 inches but a 32 inch screen will offer the best compromise, showing both HDTV and standard definition images at the best quality available. Quality from flat screens is expected to increase dramatically in the coming years and as HDTV broadcasts become more common a large screen TV will really be the only way to benefit.
