"We're not keen on the awkward control system and the mechanical wheel looks and feels cheap, but audio playback is good, battery life is terrific and the player itself is compact."

"The SanDisk Sansa e280 does many things well and, despite some gripes, we were impressed. But if the SanDisk Sansa e280 is to compete with iPod nano it needs a few design tweaks."

The flash-based MP3 player was tested in 6 different magazines most of them feeling the product did at least have some merit.
SanDisk has been gunning for Apple's top spot for a long time now and the Sansa range has been their best effort so far.
The e280 features a 1.8in LCD screen, edging the Sansa forward in the game of one-upmanship with the iPod nano. It also boasts 8GB of flash memory which can be expanded with microSD memory cards, pleasingly enough, these are also available from SanDisk (which is incidentally the world's largest manufacturer of flash memory, a point not missed by the teams at both Personal Computer World and Gadget Centre).
File support ranges from the standard MP3, Wav and WMA to JPEG picture files and MOV videos. Audio quality is described as 'excellent' (Personal Computer World and GadgetCentre) and the screen is bright and clear.
Under the microscope, the SanDisk Sansa E280 (8 GB) was able to obtain its best score of "unbeatable" (5 out of 5 stars) in the 9/2007 issue of Computer Buyer & Upgrades magazine. The product received its worst result from What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision magazine (issue 4/2007) with a score of "average" (3 out of 5 stars).
Among its class, the flash-based MP3 player offers great value, being awarded "Best Buy" in the Computer Buyer & Upgrades magazine.
All-in-all, the Sansa e-280 is a neat little MP3 player and due to SanDisk's massive market share in the world of flash memory, there is quite a price advantage compared to Apple's nano, a point made by almost all magazines.
