In their review of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ50 bridge camera Computer Shopper awarded the product 5 out of 5 stars. The review can be found in issue (1/2007) and (3/2007) of the magazine.
The bridge camera was put through its paces in the test labs of 9 magazines and received mostly positive reviews.
Panasonic's DMC-FZ50 is a 10 megapixel digital bridge camera that offers a 12x optical zoom lens, movie mode, ISO speeds of up to 1600 and support for SDHC cards. Image quality was generally agreed to be very good at low sensitivity settings, but Ben Pitt at Computer Shopper magazine accuses the camera of failing at higher settings, saying that the 800 and 1600 ISO settings are 'pointless' due to excessive noise. This criticism aside, the FZ 50 was still able to achieve Best Buy status at Computer Shopper not once, but twice.
The camera's image stabilisation was praised by Gordon Laing at CameraLabs.com, and his test shots showed a great improvement over non stabilised images at full-zoom.
The big body of the Lumix camera was a divisive factor amongst reviewers, CNet's staff finding it too large while others felt it offered more stability and gave a 'satisfying SLR-like feel' (Computer Shopper Jan/2007).
The number of Best Buy awards that the camera has racked up speak volumes for its quality, but read the reviews in whole and try and get a hands on to see where you stand on the size issue.
