The digital SLR camera was reviewed by 15 magazines with special attention paid to performance, and gave reviewers little cause to complain, achieving fair results accross the board.
The Nikon D80 is a prosumer digital SLR camera aimed squarely at the amateur enthusiast and with a feature set including a 10MP sensor, 2.5inch LCD screen, RAW support and a maximum ISO setting of 3200.
The reviewer at CameraLabs.com noted the lack of in-camera image stabilisation and dust removal, calling Nikon to task for only offering a software option to filter of dust which could only be applied to RAW files and which had to be purchased separately. TrustedReviews did however comment on the excellent in-camera processing, saying that, in prints especially; 'it takes a keen eye to spot any difference between converted RAW and JPEG Fine images'. In fact, PC Advisor, which also crowned the D-80 with its Gold Award, was impressed with both the image and build quality of the camera, suggesting the Nikon 'simply oozes quality'.
Under the microscope, the Nikon D80 was able to obtain its best score of 91% in the "Book of Tests/2006" issue of What Digital Camera magazine. ThinkCamera online magazine (12/2006), gave the product its lowest score; a rating of 8 out of 10 points, which says a lot about its quality.
The Nikon D80 was given further plaudits in the shape of; "Tester's Choice" (Practical Photography 12/2006), "Silver Award" (Digital Photo 12/2006), and "Highly Recommended" (Camera Labs 9/2006).
In summing up, the CNet editorial staff concluded that the D80 was a 'sure-fire winner' for anyone with a background in Nikon cameras and therefore a lens collection to match the camera's strengths.
