More information at: test (Stiftung Warentest), issue 2/2007 Just being ‘practical’ is not enough Drill the hole, insert screw and assemble: cordless drills/screwdrivers are practical and also work in hard to reach places. But some tools will soon let you down. e.g.: ‘Einhell’. One full battery charge of the BPAS 14.4 AK will only last long enough to drill 23 holes or insert 25 screws. This makes it impossible to construct even a shelving unit. ‘Test.de’ will show you which cordless drill/screwdrivers work well and go the distance. 15 cordless drills and 3 cordless screwdrivers were tested. They were rated from “very good” to “inadequate”. Among the test criteria were: functions (drill, screw, ...), handling (manageability and user friendliness, charging time, weight, features ...), stress test, environmental characteristics and health (battery type, phthalate plasticizer in the handle ...) and safety.

A cordless screwdriver is especially useful when there are lots of tough screws to screw in or unscrew. It is not necessary to turn every one by hand and so the user won't get as tired as fast. A cordless screwdriver can be used for wood or metal and even the least expensive versions will have some sort of torque control to help keep the screwdriver under control when in use.

Some higher powered units will also be capable of drilling into softer materials like soft wood and plaster. Because there is no need to have the device plugged in and hence no trailing cable, they are especially mobile and can be easily taken up ladders or into tight areas with no fear of tripping on the wire or not having enough reach to finish the job. A 9.6 volt screwdriver will be enough for occasional use, for instance, around the home, putting up picture frames or putting together flat packed furniture. A larger, 12 volt screwdriver should be used when it will be used more intensively. Also think about getting an extra battery pack or two, the wisdom of this will be borne out during a renovation project as a battery will usually only last a few hours per charge. One battery can be left on charge while the other is in use and vice versa. Although, it is possible to buy fast charge batteries that can be fully topped up in as little as fifteen minutes. A mini screwdriver will cost around ten pounds while a more high-powered model will probably cost around three times that.
