Camcorders

The cheapest entry-level devices with good image quality include the MiniDV camcorder. In addition, camcorders with memory cards, hard disk drives (HDD) and DVD drives are available. So-called hybrid camcorders even work with two different storage media. A distinction is now made between the three recording formats DV, HDV and AVCHD. More...

"Samsung HMX-H200 review"
1 Camcorder (approx. £260)
PC Pro
Published on 8/2010
On test: Samsung HMX-H200
"Selling camcorders is a tough old business right now. With smartphones, DSLRs and compacts all now offering HD video modes, the traditional barrel-shaped video shooter is under threat. So what can Samsung's budget H200 offer that an equivalent point-and-shoot camera can't?" Review details: Single test.    Test results
"Canon Legria HF S21 Review"
1 Camcorder (approx. £960)
TrustedReviews

On test: Canon Legria HF S21
"A couple of years ago, Canon was setting the benchmark for HD camcorders, with the seminal HF10 and its derivatives. But the 2009 Legria selection fell between two stools. The HF S10 was too costly at launch, and the HF20 didn't have the same image quality as Canon's 2008 models. So now we're well into 2010, can Canon's latest high-end offering, the Legria HF S21, redress the balance?" Review details: Single test. One HD camcorder was reviewed and rated on design, features, performance and value.    Test results
"Panasonic HDC-SD600 review"
1 Camcorder (approx. £500)
Expert Reviews
Published on 7/2010
On test: Panasonic HDC-SD600
"Back in June we looked at Panasonic's flagship camcorder models, and concluded that the memory card based HDC-SD700 was the camcorder to buy if you were feeling flush - on release it was nearly £700, though you can pick it up now for £650. Here we're looking at its little sibling, the SD600, and despite its significantly lower price, surprisingly little has changed." Review details: Single test.    Test results
"Sony NEX-VG10 review"
1 Camcorder
PC Advisor
Published on 7/2010
On test: Sony NEX-VG10 (with 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 lens)
"The Sony NEX-VG10 camera shoots 1920-by-1080 AVCHD video at 60 interlaced fields per second (you're fixed at that 60i frame rate) and maxes out at a 24mbps bit rate for video capture." Review details: Single test.    Test results
"Panasonic HDC-SD60 Review"
1 Camcorder with Still Image Function (approx. £320)
TrustedReviews
Published on 7/2010
On test: Panasonic HDC-SD60
"Panasonic currently has a strong position at the high end of the HD camcorder market, with recent models such as the HDC-TM700 offering an almost perfect blend of enthusiast features and image quality. But more budget-oriented models like the HDC-TM10 sacrificed a little too much to be similarly dominant in their respective price range. In particular, the choice of a 1/6in sensor meant low-light performance wasn't quite on par with the likes of Sony's Exmor-equipped HDR-CX105E or JVC's Everio GZ-HD300." Review details: Single test. One camcorder was reviewed and rated on design, features, performance and value.    Test results

Camcorders

MiniDV camcorders are attractive not only for their low cost and image quality, but also for the simple post-processing of the filmed material. Therefore it is not without good reason that professional camcorders are DV or MiniDV compatible. Camcorders with memory cards are characterised primarily by their pocket format. Most devices equipped with SD cards have a limited storage capacity, which can be increased by SDHC cards of up to 32 gigabytes. In the case of DVD camcorders, the advantage is that they allow you to edit the footage on the product and, using a suitable player, it can be played back immediately. Regarding storage capacity, the hard drive camcorders is the undisputed winner. The standard units have a capacity of 30-60 GB. For those who wish to alternate between different storage media, but would rather have only one device, a hybrid camcorder is recommended. This offers a combination of memory formats, e.g. hard disk and DVD, DVD and memory card or hard drive and memory card. DV, HDV and AVCHD are the recording formats used. They differ in respect to compression of the recorded image and sound data. The advantage of HDV and AVCHD is their higher compression and high definition standard, which makes possible the playback of their footage on HD / FullHD devices, without loss of quality. In addition to these criteria optics and image sensors lay at the heart of every camcorder. A distinction is made between CCD and CMOS sensors, but both now provide almost identical services.
