DigiCamReview

On test: Samsung Digimax L55W
Announced on the 3rd of June 2005, the Samsung Digimax L55W is a compact 5 megapixel digital camera with a wide-angle 4.8x optical zoom lens and a large 2.8" wide-screen. The camera appears to be loosely based on the Ricoh Caplio R1v and appears to share the same lens. The 4.8x optical zoom lens is equivalent to 28 - 135mm on a 35mm camera. The Samsung Digimax L55W is available from around £199, this makes it slightly expensive compared to the new Ricoh Caplio R4 and R3 - both available for around the same price, but with image stabilisation and a bigger zoom (7.1x optical instead of 4.8x). The Samsung Digimax L55W is one of a small number of digital cameras to feature a 2.8" wide-screen, the newly announced Casio Exilim EX-Z1000 being one of the others available. The camera is enclosed in a sturdy metal body and is available in silver or dark grey. The L55W can record video in 640 x 480 resolution at 30fps with sound and digital image stabilisation. The body measures:Approx. 99 x 55 x 27mm (without protruding parts), and weighs approx. 169g. excluding battery and memory card.    More

Updates seem to come thick and fast where cameras such as this, the Canon S3IS are concerned and in this case, the S3 features some minor tweaks in terms of overall changes, but tweaks, which, nevertheless, make a significant difference in terms of what the camera, can produce.    More

"Nikon Coolpix L4"

I’ve reviewed a lot of digital SLRs and other expensive high-performance cameras recently, so I thought it was about time I took a look at the other end of the market, the budget-priced low-spec compacts. Never one to do things by halves, this week I’ve got the cheapest camera I’ve ever reviewed, and rather surprisingly it’s a Nikon. The Coolpix L4 was launched in mid-March this year at a recommended price of just £129.99, but now a few months later you can get it for under £80 from a number of online retailers, as well as a few high street stores. In fact you’d have to try pretty hard to pay three figures for it.    More

"Ricoh Caplio R4 digital camera Review"

The Ricoh Caplio R4 builds on the R-Series range, offering a svelte, well-styled compact digital camera that provides a level of specification and shooting options akin to a much more expensive camera. A new square-pixel type, 6-megapixel sensor provides plenty of resolution for larger prints or cropping and is ably assisted – on the spec side of things – with a comprehensive raft of features.    More

"Nikon D200 digital SLR camera Review"

The closest camera to the new D200 in terms of specification, build and handling is Nikon’s D2x but the D200 is lighter and smaller than that camera yet features most of that camera's power – if not exceeds it – in terms in terms of both shooting and handling features and its performance. In fact, the D200 lacks virtually nothing in terms of control (customisable or otherwise) and image grabbing technology. Let's look at some of the key kit.    More

At first glance the v570 is a cut down v610. It has many of the features you need from the v610 and drops a few that you probably don't but its metal iris conceals a secret that sets it apart from all other compacts.    More

My introduction to the first ever Sony D-SLR, the Alpha 100 took place after a 2 hours drive into the Morrocan desert, North Africa. The DSC-T9 arrived in the UK in January this year, coming into the Sony's Cyber-shot DSC range of very compact cameras. The Optio T10 from Pentax marks the arrival of a third touchscreen digital compact in as many months, the competition shaping up in the form of Sony’s Cyber-shot N1 and Kodak’s EasyShare One. However, it was Toshiba with its 2002 launched and similarly named, 2-megapixel Toshiba PDR T10 that introduced the world to touchscreen controlled cameras.    More

"Nikon Coolpix L2"

Weight and appearance make this feel like a quality piece of equipment. The model I tested came in gunmetal grey, which will not scuff or mark too quickly. It also has a pleasing grip surface for your right hand (sorry southpaws!) and an attractive chrome coloured strip along the top and down one side. Whilst the L2 looks like a “camera”, I would also give it ten out of ten for understated styling. It runs on two AA batteries, which on cheaper cameras are preferable to manufacturers' own batteries. There's also a separate cavity for the SD media card, which is better than just having the one space shared with the battery.    More

Although not as slim as some current cameras, the DSC-S600 is significantly cheaper, and you get Sony quality and features. For many people the size is much better as it's easier to hold and there's space to set the controls out in a more intuitive layout. You also get an optical viewfinder, which many people still find is a more natural way to take photos, and a decent tripod socket.    More

"Nikon Coolpix S6 Wireless"

On test: Nikon Coolpix S6
Announced on the 21st of Febuary 2006, the Nikon Coolpix S6 is an ultra-compact 6 megapixel digital camera with a 3x optical zoom lens and a large 3" screen. The camera even has built in Wi-Fi support so that you can transfer photos wirelessly to your computer. The 3x optical zoom Nikkor lens is equivalent to 35 - 105mm on a 35mm camera. The Nikon Coolpix S6 is available from around £233, this makes it good value for money for an ultra-compact digital camera with built in wireless support. The camera is enclosed in a sturdy metal body and is available in silver or black (and possibly white). The S6 can record video in 640 x 480 resolution at 30fps with sound. The body measures:Approx. 100.5 x 60 x 21 mm (without protruding parts), and weighs approx. 140g. excluding battery and memory card. The Nikon Coolpix S6 is the "bigger brother" to the Nikon Coolpix S5 - the S5 features a smaller body, a smaller 2.5" screen, and lacks the built in wireless support.    More

Budget digital SLRs are the fastest growing sector of the photography market, and deliver better pictures than digital compacts. "Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ1"

On test: Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ1
Announced on the 14th of Febuary 2006, the Panasonic Lumix TZ1 is a 5 megapixel digital camera with a 10x optical zoom lens and a 2.5" screen. Panasonic's website states that it's "The World's Smallest 10x Optical Zoom Digital Camera" - whilst this may now be out of date due to the smaller Kodak Easyshare V610 - the Kodak does not feature the Panasonic's optical image stabilisation, a feature that is important for ultra zoom digital cameras. The 10x optical zoom Leica DC lens is equivalent to 35 - 350mm on a 35mm camera. The Panasonic Lumix TZ1 is available from around £245, this makes it fairly good value for money for a compact digital camera with a 10x optical zoom lens with image stabilisation. The camera is enclosed in a sturdy metal body and is available in silver or back. The TZ1 can record video in 16:9 wide-angle aspect ratio or VGA 640 x 480 at 30fps with sound. The body measures:Approx. 112 x 58.1 x 40.2 mm (without protruding parts), and weighs approx. 262g. including battery and memory card.    More

"Ricoh Caplio R4"

On test: Ricoh Caplio R4
Announced on the 23rd of Febuary 06, the Ricoh Caplio R4 is a new 6 megapixel update to the Ricoh Caplio R3 - it has a 7.1x optical zoom lens - this is impressive considering that the camera is roughly the same size as other cameras with only a 3x optical zoom lens. The camera's wide-angle 7.1x optical zoom lens starts at 28mm and zooms to 200mm equivalent, and has a built in lens-cover. The camera also features a "Vibration Correction" CCD sensor, much like Konica Minolta's Anti-shake technology - image stabilisation is becoming more and more common as an effective way to reduce camera shake and blur in low-light or with long zoom lenses. The Ricoh Caplio R4 is available from £210, which is little more than the R3 costs, this makes it good value for money as an compact digital camera with a big zoom. The camera is enclosed in a black, or silver metal body. The R4 records 320x240 movies with sound at 30fps. The camera is very compact and fits easily into pockets. The camera takes a rechargable lithium-ion battery and measures: 95 x 53 x 26 mm (without protruding parts), and weighs 135g (without batteries and memory card).    More
