PC Advisor suggested two reasons the XD-E500 wouldn't do for Toshiba what the manufacturer had been hoping; firstly, its upscaling, while good, wasn't as close to HD as the publicity material would suggest, and second, the price was high for a standard-definition DVD player with rival upscaling models costing around half as much as the £120 price tag of the Toshiba.
