Compared to other phones in the same price range such as HTC's One X or even Samsung's previous-generation Galaxy S2, the Xperia J simply can't justify the outlay in The Gadget Show's opinion: it looks and feels cheapish and bulky, it runs the slightly dated Android 4.0, and its 1GHz CPU doesn't impress. Despite its nice display, there are much better options to be had for this money.

Value for money: 6 out of 10 points

Whichever way you look at it, the Xperia J is a decidedly unexciting phone. Its single-core CPU and 512MB of RAM make tasks like firing up the camera terribly sluggish, although this lack of power does mean that battery life is pretty good. Trusted Reviews praised its stylish design and fantastic display, but that aside, there's nothing here that cheaper handsets can't give you.

Single test
"excellent" (4 out of 5 stars)

The Xperia J is a thin and curvy phone that definitely stands out among a sea of near-identical Android handsets, at least design-wise. Internally it's more of a run-of-the-mill midrange affair, something that isn't bad at all in S21's opinion. The processor is decent, as is connectivity, the 4-inch display is par for the course and battery life - actually its best feature - is superb.

For Cnet the Ice Cream Sandwich OS saves the Xperia J from being completely ignored. This version of Android is rarely seen on a budget handset and even rarer is the promise from Sony that all devices from this range will receive the latest Jelly Bean version. Average is the best word for the rest of the phone, but if it is priced fairly it will be a reasonable budget choice.

If it wasn't for the stiff competition, Tech Radar would recommend the Xperia J as a good choice. Unfortunately for Sony that was never going to happen in today’s market and the Xperia J looks set to be outdone by Orange before it even hits the stores. Its attractive design and capable Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system simply won't be enough to push it into the lead.
