"Sony’s TVs regularly offer stylish design, effectively implemented innovations and striking picture quality. And all that’s true here. But this is a pricey TV and the attention-grabbing LED backlighting of rival sets may attract you instead. Despite this absence, the other features, like the excellent Bravia Engine 3 image processing set-up and the headline 200Hz frame rate, mean the image is sharp, bright and immersive."

With fine ergonomics, high specs, accomplished TV reception, good DVD upscaling and impressive Blu-ray performance in the eyes of What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision, the Sony KDL-46Z5500, though suffering slight sibilance sound issues, was found not to suffer from the backlighting issues of other Sony TVs, thereby defining it a great product with many strengths.

Value for money: 8 out of 10 points
A TV that well deserves to be loved, Sony's KDL-46Z5500 has the best design styling in a long while, and its 200Hz technology with HD images is superb. It disappoints on price though, especially with notable backlight inconsistencies.
