9 out of 10 points "group test winner"
"Plus points: Generally excellent picture quality, lots of features, good connectivity. Minus points: The AppliCast online system is a waste of time, standard def skin can look a touch waxy, and it's not particularly cheap."

"... It has to be said that the Sony Bravia KDL-46W5500 can't compare to its LED-rocking Bravia cousins when it comes to picture quality. Blacks are not as deep and colours lack vibrancy. But then Sony's LED efforts clock in at almost twice the price of this slab of HD gold. Upscaling on the Sony Bravia KDL-46W5500 is also right out of the top drawer, giving standard def goods a greater sheen. The only major letdown is the AppliCast web connectivity, which sadly proves that full–on web connected TV just doesn't cut it yet. ... A killer HD TV loaded up with great features, good looks and enough to keep you entertained this winter."

"Sony's Z5500 and X4500 ranges are undoubtedly talented, but they're also rather expensive -- intimidatingly so in the case of the X4500 series. It's a relief, then, that the relatively affordable Bravia KDL-46W5500 is both an excellent performer and full of genuinely useful features. Really, the only weak link is Sony's AppliCast online system, but there's always the potential for that to be improved in the coming weeks and months."

With the irritation of backlighting being a non-issue now, Sony's Bravia KDL-46W5500 46" LCD TV can be appreciated fully on its merits. 100Hz motion and highly competent all-round sound add to what is genuinely an exceptional LCD TV.
