One of the most interesting qualities of macro lenses is that they barely show any distortion, and Sony's 100mm f/2.8 is no exception. IT Reviews praised its sharpness at all apertures and 1:1 magnification, but said that its price tag seemed a bit steep considering the AF is quite noisy and that it can be pretty slow due its lack of an internal motor. Good but not outstanding.

Compared to Canon and Nikon's offerings, Photo Answers considered Sony's 100mm f/2.8 D to be overpriced. Due to its lack of a SSW motor, it's noisy when focusing, and although it sports a metal mount, the rest of the lens is plastic. The focusing ring didn't feel particularly smooth either.
