Single test
4 out of 5 points
While not exactly bursting at the seams with features, the Sigma DP1 managed to impress MacUser enough with its image quality to snag a four star rating. Its lens was the high point of the camera, with no discernible barrel or pin-cushion distortion and pin sharp results even at the edges of the frame.

6 out of 10 points Value for money: 5 out of 10
It is aimed at filling the gap in the semi-pro market but only disappointed many professionals. Think Camera thought that the 14.1 megapixel DSLR-sized sensor is impressive but the technology in still unproven and the price is simply to high for what you are given.

"Good performance" (4 out of 5 stars) Value for money: 3 out of 5 stars
Featuring a Foveon X3 sensor unique to Sigma cameras, the DP1 is certainly an interesting camera with excellent image quality. Unfortunately, Digital Photo found general use of the camera to be somewhat more sluggish than the competition and the menus weren't as clear as they could have been. Still, for a unique take on the digital camera, the DP-1 is worth a look, as long as the price tag doesn't put you off first.

"good" (3 out of 5 stars) Value for money: 2 out of 5 stars
Being the first of its kind it is reasonable to expect a few teething problems and this is exactly what Practical Photography found during its review. While the camera delivered sharp images at low ISOs, its high ISO performance wasn't too impressive. The menu system was also rather lacklustre and sluggish. Still, taken as a preview of things to come, the next Sigma compact could be promising.

83% Value for money: 16 out of 20
The reason so many heads are turning is because the Sigma DP1 is the first digital compact to feature the Foveon X3 sensor. The Foveon X3 could only be found in DSLR models up until this point. It offers 14MP and is shining with stylish charm. According to What Digital Camera Magazine the Sigma DP1 is not without its flaws, for example its poor, pop-up flash. All in all, though, a nicely designed compact digital with generally good image quality overall.

8 out of 10 points Value for money: 6 out of 10
It is certainly not a cheap compact and is in fact more expensive than some full sized DSLRs. TrustedReviews.com thought the DP1 was more of an acquired taste. Although its style, charm and downright uniqueness can be overpowering in making you forget its inconsistencies in image quality.
