"... The 3G and Wi-Fi support really help the Dolfin V1.5 browser. It’s pretty quick to render pages and although it doesn’t have multi-touch you can double tap on a column of text to automatically zoom in on it. ... The Monte is a good halfway house between a feature phone and full-blown smartphone. It has impressive social networking features, a reasonably easy to use interface and good connectivity. It's just a shame the user interface doesn't provide an onscreen QWERTY keyboard and that Samsung hasn't made the most of that capacitive screen by adding multi-touch support."

The Samsung Monte was well received by PC Advisor, who thought it was a good option for those looking for a fully-featured smartphone on a budget. Even though the camera was poor and the system suffered from some sluggishness, the sharp screen, responsive UI, good music player and great battery life more than made up for it.

"... The Samsung Monte's positive aspects are that it's small, features a 3.5mm headset jack, and a Clever Smart Unlock System. Cons of the phone are that there is no Qwerty keyboard and the widgets are too large. ... the Samsung Monte isn't a bad handset by any measure of means, it just doesn’t have anything to set it apart from the crowd. And when you consider how much there actually is too choose from at this level of the market the Monte really doesn't make a lasting impression at all."

"It’s important to keep the Samsung Monte in perspective. This is a handset that falls unequivocally in the low-end price bracket. For the handset to therefore include high-end features such as HSDPA, Wi-Fi, a capacitive touch-screen and A-GPS, Samsung deserves praise. Yet we can’t help but feel the Samsung Monte is effectively mutton dressed as lamb. ..."

"Samsung's Monte is a decent enough budget touch screen handset ... What's missing is good social networking abilities and more fully integrated applications ... such as picture sending to a phone's address book. Seeing as this is supposedly aimed at the social networker we would have thought this would have been addressed properly, where the apps sadly let the Monte down. The actual Facebook and Twitter websites separately offer much more functionality than individual widgets do on the Monte."

"When it comes down to it, we just can't recommend the Monte. It gets the basic functions right, so we commend it for that, but it's so frustrating to use. We know it's aimed as being somewhat budget compared to smartphones, but it's still £120 - and this doesn't feel like £120 of quality overall. We'd advise those interested in the Monte to glance over at its stablemate, the Genio Slide. It's got a touchscreen and a physical QWERTY keyboard, which alleviates at least some of the control issues we have. ... It's not the worst phone in the world, but there are much better phones available, even from the same manufacturer."

"... the age-old TouchWiz problem still exists: there's only space for about three widgets per screen, which is pretty rubbish by anyone's standards, especially when compared to HTC and Apple. ... The Samsung Monte isn't a bad handset by any measure of means, it just doesn't have anything to set it apart from the crowd. And when you consider how much there actually is to choose from at this level of the market the Monte really doesn't make a lasting impression at all. ... A lacklustre mid ranger from Samsung."

"... the Samsung Monte might please those who keep their wallet under lock and key, and the lovely little additions such as BBC iPlayer support in Wi-Fi hotspots, and a very effective Facebook widget will validate your purchase if all you want is to spy on your friends and munch a few tunes and movies on the move. But it doesn't do any better than plenty of other touchscreen phones the company already has on sale. ... A decent phone, but an unnecessary addition to Samsung's touchscreen line up."

"... The Monte's call quality is excellent, with voices coming through loud and clear. Expect the battery to last no more than a couple of days if you're taking advantage of the Monte's many features. ... Samsung has managed to pack the Monte so full of useful tools and widgets that you probably won't miss the app stores found on higher-end devices. If you frequently use social-networking sites but don't fancy splashing out on a high-end smart phone, the Monte will serve you well. If you're looking for a phone with similar social-networking features and don't mind losing the touchscreen, check out the Sony Ericsson Elm."
