The Galaxy S might have been superseded by more modern models such as the Galaxy S 2, but it's still a very impressive smartphone that sweeps the floor with most of its rivals almost a year after its launch. Know Your Mobile pointed out its still unrivalled Super AMOLED display, top of the line performance for a single-core CPU and decent camera, despite the lack of full HD video.

"The Entertainer"

"The Galaxy S's 4in, AMOLED screen is perhaps the most stunning of any available. Plenty of lovely pixels mean even films with subtitles look good. Powered by Android and a super-charged 1GHz processor, the Galaxy provides a huge amount of entertainment potential. ..."

"excellent" (8 out of 10 Points)

According to ZDNet Samsung's Galaxy S is their flagship Android phone for 2010, and the reviewer found that it stood up to its best competitors, and boasted a big screen, which was well suited to data-rich apps. They also commended the good sized virtual keyboards that are available. However, they pointed out that some of the apps provided would not be particularly useful for business users, and that the battery life is less than impressive, as with many smartphones.

2.5 out of 5 stars

The main thing of importance when reviewing a camera is the image quality, and sadly, this was quite poor on the Samsung Galaxy S camera phone, according to What Digital Camera. They couldn't rely on the white balance, and images appeared soft. They did mention though, that it includes HD video and MicroSD support, and the handset itself was nicely designed.

If you insist on being kept up to date and connected to the internet while travelling, the Android based Galaxy S from Samsung can offer just that, plus entertain you. Value for money: 9 out of 10 points

Product tested: i9000 Galaxy S (8 GB)

With its 1GHz processor, an extraordinarily responsive Super AMOLED touchscreen, a great camera and excellent video support, the Galaxy S impressed Smartphone Daily enough to be described as one of the very best Android smartphones available, and only Samsung's TouchWiz interface and its plastic case kept it from earning full marks.

5 out of 5 points

The Samsung Galaxy S is not 100% flawless, but it certainly beats most other Android devices. It has the ability to play video in just about any format and displays them on the stunning AMOLED screen. It also has a 5Mp camera that can shoot 720p HD video as well and an ample 16GB of memory to store everything on. FiveFWD's only disappointment was the cheap build quality.

Product tested: i9000 Galaxy S (16 GB)

The i9000 is slender and lightweight with a beautiful AMOLED display and quick processor. The Android interface was easy to use and offered a large choice of apps too. The Galaxy S now sets the benchmark for other Android handsets. Expert reviews claim it is the best Android phone they have seen so far and a pleasure to use so gave it a Best Buy award.

"very good" (5 out of 6 stars)

Value for money: "very good" (5 out of 6 stars), "Recommended"

PC Pro placed this phone as a great alternative to the iPhone 4 saying it was cheaper and almost as good, although those with their hearts set on an Apple handset will probably not be swayed. Although the design, camera and music player are behind that of the iPhone 4, it does have a delightful 4 inch OLED display and great software providing sprightly performance.

"... When you're spending this sort of money, you expect your phone to have a wow factor ... and we feel the Galaxy S doesn't quite deliver. ... The Galaxy S should have been a cracking handset and in many ways it is. Its screen is very good, it's fast, it's packed with features, and looks pretty decent as well. Certainly if you're looking for a large and powerful Android smartphone, it's up there with the best. However, there's no escaping the fact that it feels like a blatant copy of a certain other phone and, moreover, it doesn't have the fit and finish to really make you want it."

4 out of 5 stars

Boasting a gorgeous 4 inch Super AMOLED screen the Samsung Galaxy S offers a large selection of multimedia features, including the easy to navigate TouchWiz music player. PC Advisor feel that the camera interface is clean and user friendly with good shooting modes, although the lack of a flash might disappoint some users and the photo quality was not very impressive.

"The Samsung Galaxy S is the best smartphone Samsung has made so far, and it's easy to see in the build quality and sheer functionality of the device. It excels at movies, music and internet, is a good messaging device and works fast and promptly, with minimal slowdown ... If you're in the mood for a new smartphone, we advise you check it out. ..."
