The rugged Samsung Galaxy Extreme Xcover S5690 is waterproof for up to 30 minutes in 1m of water, therefore the chassis has a sturdy build. The 3.6 inch screen is covered in Gorilla Glass, is scratch resistant but has a low 320x480 pixel resolution. It's a mid-range Android phone, running the 2.3 OS and the processor only runs at 800MHz, so it doesn't have the fastest operation.

Though Samsung have previously made rugged phones, this is their first rugged Android smartphone so expectations are high. Sadly it is average rather than great due to the specifications - poor camera and video functions, web browsing isn't supported by Flash and TechRadar found water seeped in when they ran it under a tap. There are better options available than the Xcover Extreme.

The Galaxy Xcover has several good points going for it, such as its affordable price, bundled Polaris Office application and the fact that it doesn't look like a ruggedised phone at all, but its lo-res display, mediocre camera, stingy internal storage and lack of Flash support led ZDNet to recommend taking a look at Motorola's Defy+ before making a purchase.
