"At £1,800, the 40PFL9704 represents a serious outlay in these days when you can pick up 42in Panasonic plasma screens for between £500 and £600. But its design, feature count, multimedia capabilities and above all picture and sound quality make it the very definition of a premium TV."

Editor's Choice
"We like: Great picture and sound quality; picture-processing system works better than that of any other Philips TV we've seen; Ambilight is superb; Freeview and Blu-ray movies both look epic.
We don't like: Expensive; DLNA capability isn't up to much."

"There’s no doubt that this set has astonishing contrast ... It’s also generously equipped with plenty of inputs, and ... there are decent speakers too. But the DLNA connectivity isn’t up to that much, and full net access is a gimmick that’s a little sluggish in our view. Paired with external HD sources, it’s a great choice, but price and lack of HD tuners preclude a higher rating."
