"Editor's Choice"
"For a 40-inch TV, £1,800 is too much to pay. In terms of performance, though, the Philips 40PFL9704H/12 is an amazing-quality set, with all the features a home user could want, as well as some little bonuses. Besides the price, it's one of our favourite TVs."

"Recommended"
"At £1,800, the 40PFL9704 represents a serious outlay in these days when you can pick up 42in Panasonic plasma screens for between £500 and £600. But its design, feature count, multimedia capabilities and above all picture and sound quality make it the very definition of a premium TV."

"We like: Great picture and sound quality; picture-processing system works better than that of any other Philips TV we've seen; Ambilight is superb; Freeview and Blu-ray movies both look epic.
We don't like: Expensive; DLNA capability isn't up to much."

"There’s no doubt that this set has astonishing contrast ... It’s also generously equipped with plenty of inputs, and ... there are decent speakers too. But the DLNA connectivity isn’t up to that much, and full net access is a gimmick that’s a little sluggish in our view. Paired with external HD sources, it’s a great choice, but price and lack of HD tuners preclude a higher rating."

"A premium price for a premium TV. If you've got the cash, this is well worth the outlay."

"Hot Product"
"With powerful speakers and fluid, contrast-heavy pictures, this 40-inch TV shows just what can be done to the flatscreen TV idea. Effective use of LED backlighting and the useful, if slightly flawed, Perfect Natural Motion feature helps create some of the best Blu-ray pictures we’ve seen. And although it’s expensive, there’s little to combat the 40PFL9704 at this price."
