"very good to excellent" (72%)

"Silver Award"

While the picture quality of the TG-2 is not mindblowing, it's perfectly adequate for most situations. Exposures are generally accurate, colours are vivid and its underwater performance is excellent. Its build quality is as rock solid as expected, and DPReview were very fond of its well-implemented GPS system. Even with its niggles, it's one of the best rugged compacts out there.

Value for money: 3.5 out of 5 stars, "Recommended"

The Stylus Tough TG-2 is something of a mixed bag, since although it delivers excellent colours, detail is somewhat lacking, and while performance is good, lens noise is picked up during video recording. ePHOTOzine also found its panorama mode disappointing, but praised its manual controls, AP mode, macro capabilities and fast f/2 lens. Worth checking out.

It's one of the most expensive rugged compact cameras on the market, but the Tough TG-2 is possibly the best too. IT Reviews praised its fast lens, low picture noise up to ISO 800, crisp footage, quick performance and built-in GPS, aside from other useful features, and said that despite its poor sharpness at the maximum aperture, if you can afford it it's well worth going for.

One of the strongest points of Olympus' TG-2 is possibly its performance, since it's lightning quick to start up and focus, but obviously its tough build is a huge point in its favour too. Picture quality is good overall, but What Digital Camera recommended staying away from ISO 800. In any case, apart from its small buttons there's not much to complain about in this excellent camera.

Like most waterproof and ruggedised cameras, picture quality is not the Stylus TG-2's strong suit, but it does a very acceptable job overall even if noise reduction tends to smear subtle details and textures. Expert Reviews praised its performance and decent video quality, but lamented its lack of a manual mode for those who want more control. A decent, if not mindblowing, camera.

3.5 out of 5 stars

The picture quality of the Tough TG-2 is more than adequate if you don't plan on making large prints out of your shots, since despite their overall sharpness details can appear smudged, especially in out-of-focus areas. TechRadar said that the screen is prone to reflections in bright light and that it's hard to use the camera with gloves, but overall it's a good rugged camera.

"... The TG-2 does a great job of exposure, keeping highlights in check whilst still pulling out detail from the shadows. ... Video is less impressive, marred by that juddery zoom, not dealing well with panning motions. ..."
