"Taking up most of the functions that made the success of the Nikon D3, D3s marks a milestone in the history of photography: it is indeed the first DSLR to sport the record 'push' sensitivity of 102 400 ISO. Superbly constructed, with an excellent viewfinder and a top-level autofocus system, it is ideal for DSLR for the pros, in particular for reportage and sport photography."

"... It’s not only the price tag, but its size and weight and - unless you make full use of the increased low-light sensitivity and speed - these factors combined with a complex menu are a lot to reckon with for everyday use. I’ve yet to compare it with its main rival, the Canon EOS-1D Mark IV, but I struggle to find anything that I would have wanted improved on the D3s other than the upgrading of the D-Movie to full HD. Indeed, the D3s is as accomplished a pro digital reflex as it comes, and precisely because it’s a professional model, operationally, it won’t suit everybody."

"... Images shot between ISO200 and ISO1600 were virtually indistinguishable from each other. ISO3200 saw a little noise creeping in, but not enough to render the setting unusable for print. It was only by the time we reached the heady setting of ISO12800 that noise became troubling. ... a word of hesitation is reserved for its new video features. The addition of HD video to Nikon's top-end camera was never in question, but the implementation is slightly disappointing ... The current king of the DSLR castle, the D3s is almost compromise-free - something reflected in the price."

"Likes: A solid workhorse that really delivers the results. High ISO is stunning, as is the focus system, and everything else is a bonus.
Dislikes: Movie mode could do more, price is limiting."

"In terms of versatility, the Nikon D3S is the best DSLR we've ever tested, and the image quality in ultra low light is a major selling point. If you don't need to take advantage of the D3S's high ISO settings though, the D700/D300S offer better value."

"Hot Product"
"... The D3s is designed to offer a poised, higher performance professional solution and that it does very well indeed. Once again ... this DSLR is close to a ten out of ten. However, the few minor niggles (low light AF probably the biggest surprise, and the cost) and the way the market has progressed in terms of HD video mean the Nikon D3s achieves a very creditable 9."

Value for money: "good performance" (4 out of 5 stars)
"... The D3 was still the best pro high-ISO model on the market when the D3S was announced, but Nikon has somehow managed to improve on it further still. The performance is rapid, it has excellent handling characteristics and a rock-solid build. That's not forgetting image quality, with a high ISO performance that sets a new benchmark for D-SLRs. ..."

"It's hard to find any major concern with the D3S. It would be good to have more resolution, but you have to compromise to get the kind of speed this camera offers. This is the action snapper's Holy Grail."

"Wired: We didn't think that the D3 could be beaten for low light performance. It can. The D3s can practically see in the dark. Good quality video, with an external mic jack for serious use. Self-cleaning sensor means an end to constant spotting out in Photoshop.
Tired: Almost nothing, but some people will complain that 12 million pixels isn't enough in 2009, and Canon still has the edge over Nikon terms of video resolution (but not by much)."

"... the D3s seemed inevitable, but we didn't expect much more than a D3 with video tagged on. What Nikon has done in reality is far beyond that, with the ultra-high ISO particularly pushing the limits of what's possible. It's unlike anything we've seen before and ... it's an elegant camera that promises to provide stunning image quality. ..."
