The very affordable price tag, light weight and compact size of Nikon's 40mm f/2.8 G AF-S DX makes it a tempting offering, but DSLR User said its focal length is a bit limited and the AF mechanism is not too quick. However, its optical performance at f/5.6 and above is even better than that of the more expensive 60mm model, making it quite a bargain.

The Nikon AF-S DX Micro-Nikkor 40mm f/2.8G is smaller and lighter than any other macro lenses from their range. It provides very good contrast and sharpness. Sadly there's no image stabilisation and it only fits to DX format sized cameras, but it can double as a standard fixed focal lens. Camera Labs state it 'delivers a very decent performance for the money'.

The Nikon AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8 lens can be a bit slow to focus, but otherwise ePHOTOzine couldn't find much not to like. The compact size and lightweight are agreeable, as is the good build quality. Images are wonderfully sharp and with good contrast. There is also little distortion, falloff or chromatic aberration visible, making it good value at just £250.
