"... behind the swanky exterior lies a nasty secret. The two most feared words in a mobile phone user's vocabulary: Windows Mobile. Not even the glossy TouchFLO 3D interface will help you navigate the thousands of minuscule menu options ... There are some neat, ahem, touches to the HTC Touch HD, like the accelerometer. But there's not enough software that makes use of them. And then to add insult to injury, HTC went and handicapped it further with a high price tag. Why HTC? Why? ... The HTC Touch HD, like George Bush as president, is extremely powerful, just really, really annoying."

Running on Windows Mobile, HTC's Touch HD is a fine example of design and functionality. Pleasing compact design and a large VGA screen with HSDPA, WiFi and GPS are let down by poor performance from Windows Mobile. Were it to run Android this would be the last word in touchscreen mobiles.

Value for money: 5 out of 6 stars,
"Labs Winner",
"A List"
Despite the high resolution screen, powerful processor and high-end features, the Touch HD delivers the best battery life of the group. The screen makes web browsing an excellent experience and the 5MP camera is definitely a cut above the rest. PC Pro suggested getting the phone on contract as its SIM-free price is quite high at the moment.

While battery life could have been better, overall, the Touch HD offered up a great smartphone experience with ZDnet finding the high resolution especially rewarding. HTC's TouchFLO 3D works well to mask the fingerphobic Windows Mobile 6.1 OS and the device ships with a decent software bundle that goes further than most rivals.

"Recommended"
With its excellent screen and all the benefits of a the Windows Mobile OS, Reg Hardware suggested the Touch HD was almost like a grown up, business version of the iPhone. The TouchFlo 3D interface is as close to the finger-driven perfection that the limitations of WM will allow and while the camera has no flash whatsoever, pictures taken in bright conditions are acceptable and there is dedicated panorama mode that works well.
