"Performance-wise the Canon takes the bull by the horns and is more pleasing - from the menu system to the layout, the IS and overall responsiveness. ... The Canon is more expensive but feels better built and, given its hot shoe and Speedlite flash compatibility, has an all round wider scope to justify the cost. ..."

Artefacts in the images, peculiar interface and size all count against Sony's PowerShot SX1 IS. Its speed, acceptable HD video, RAW support and 20x optical zoom all set it apart from other superzooms and even comparable DSLRs, making it one of the best around.

Using a CMOS chip may have solved some of the noise problems inherent in high ISO and big zoom numbers for Canon's PowerShot SX1 IS. Some minor issues are to be had with this camera, but price aside, it's one of the best of its type.

A well-designed and thought-out camera, Canon's PowerShot SX1 IS is let down by the choice of a CMOS chip over CCD. Poor image quality, noise at high ISO, and other problems in both still and video shooting make this a camera that is attractive but over-priced.

"Canon’s PowerShot SX1 IS is arguably one of the most technologically successful hybrid cameras to date, offering both 10 Megapixel stills and Full HD 1080p video recording in a compact body with a 20x zoom, fully articulated screen, fast continuous shooting, flash hotshoe and HDMI port. ... there’s really very little this camera doesn’t offer, and the initial absence of RAW has been fixed by a firmware update. It’s not perfect of course. The viewfinder is smaller and coarser than the SX10 IS ... Pixel-peepers will also spot slightly more noise than the SX10 IS. ..."

With lens in super-zoom territory and exceedingly fast burst mode, this is a complex and sophisticated camera that will only produce excellent results by spending time and care learning how to use it. Some shutter lag using flash is about the only criticism to be found.
