Canon Ixus 115 HS Review

Value for money: 17 out of 20 points, "Highly Recommended"

Camera Labs say it's worth remembering Canon's IXUS 115 HS is an IXUS, and as such it's got a lot to offer despite its entry-level status. It's brilliantly compact, well made, and looks great, and although the zoom is only 4x, that should be enough for most regular uses. It shares all the shooting modes of other models in the range, but the zoom can't be used during video capture.

With such minimalist controls, GadgetSpeak could forgive you for thinking Canon's Ixus 115HS is a basic model, but as they found out, it definitely isn't. Apart from its attractive look, available in a range of colours, they found it had lots more to offer, including a welcome slow motion video mode. They thought using the scene mode list in bright light could be tricky though.

What Digital Camera did have a couple of quibbles about the quality of images on offer from the Canon IXUS 115 HS, but fortunately it was easy enough to put things right, and so on the whole, image quality was impressive. Usability was also good, and with HS technology and a low price, they say it's one of the best compacts around, despite some gaps in the specification.

CNet were surprised by just what the Canon IXUS 115 HS has to offer for such a reasonable price. Gorgeous good looks are backed up with great usability, a good range of features, and perhaps most importantly, impressively solid performance, putting it way ahead of much of its competition. But CNet say there are similarly priced options that can offer more versatility.

Expert Reviews say that while Canon's Ixus 115 HS is a bit more expensive than the average budget camera, it's a bargain. Its nice feature set, Full HD video with dedicated record button, and outstanding picture quality mean it's in another league from its budget competition. The small size is certainly stylish, but it made the controls just a bit fiddly for their liking.

It's expensive for a budget compact, but the IXUS 115 HS justifies its price by offering a huge amount of creative modes, impressive low light performance and good image quality. Digicambuyer pointed out that it tends to err on the side of overexposure, but that, on the other hand, its macro mode is excellent. As an entry-level model, the 115HS is a fantastic choice.

In the opinion of Cameras.co.uk, the Canon Ixus 115 HS has pretty much everything one could ask for in a pocket camera, without being bogged down by gimmicky features that one is unlikely to use. While they found its build quality was solid, they were especially pleased with its photographs, the quality of which, they said, is tough to follow by other point-and-shoots.

As a point-and-shoot with straightforward operation and consistent image quality, the Canon Ixus 115 HS fits the bill, concludes Pocket-Lint. They found that although this compact has some of the niggles typical for devices in this range, like pixel fringing, it presents a solid value, thanks to its sizable LCD display, durable build, and detailed, vividly coloured photos.

TrustedReviews really liked the Canon Ixus 115 HS. They thought it was well built and liked its compact and sleek design, although it might be a bit too small for larger hands. It's simple to use and reliable, producing good, but not great, quality images. It has an impressive feature set too, and they think it's one of the most attractive models of its type, but it's not the cheapest.

In the opinion of ePhotozine, the Canon IXUS 115 HS's outstanding performance and excellent feature-set make it a solid value. They found it tough finding any real negatives about this camera, noting that it takes fantastic images and offers an impressive selection of scene modes and filters. Their only wish was that the D-Pad was easier to press and battery life was longer.
