The Ixus 870 IS shows why making improvements and refinements to a tried and tested design is perhaps a better bet than trying to reinvent the wheel with every new model. The interface is mature and easy to use and the camera itself feels solid and well built. Image quality is good and DP Review felt image stabilisation worked well.

Cameras.co.uk found the Ixus 870 IS to be a fast performer with good image quality in most situations and the high build quality expected from Canon's line. However, the website did find the price to be a little high, but in terms of style and build, there aren't many cameras that can compete.

"Highly Recommended"
While the use of h264 compression for movie recording was a wise move on Canon's part, Cameralabs questioned why the camera didn't support high definition resolutions. However, the camera is still easy to recommend thanks to its stabilised 4x zoom, good looks and generally pleasing image quality.
