"Best: Media features"

Product tested: Aspire 8943G Ethos (LX.PUJ02.163)

The price for the Acer Aspire Ethos 8943G is very reasonable, especially when you consider the inclusion of a Blu-ray drive and ingenious media controls. It is rather on the chunky side though and could have benefit from a higher resolution screen. T3 also liked the build quality of this machine, but said it is not as powerful as some of the competition.

The excellent 18.4in, razor sharp-resolution screen of the Acer Aspire Ethos 8943G is one of the best of any laptop on the market, according to FiveFwd. Its large size means there's plenty of room for a large, comfy keyboard and touchpad too, but it's obviously not the most portable. 3D performance isn't the best, so it's better suited to life as a media laptop than for hardcore gaming.

"Best Buy"

Product tested: Aspire 8943G Ethos (LX.PUJ02.124)

Expert Reviews consider the Acer Aspire Ethos 8943G laptop to be a great all-rounder. Its processor powers through Windows and games, it has a Full HD screen, Blu-ray disc drive, and the battery is long-lasting. It will still look a little strange to some people and the speakers are not brilliant but overall, it delivers fantastic value and they recommend it.

PC Advisor acknowledged the brilliant array of features included in the Acer Aspire 8943G. The configuration is quite fast and this machine houses a massive screen which makes it a good option as a desktop replacement, it has a ridiculously large appearance though. Considering its giant size, the life of the battery away from the power supply is most respectable.

Product tested: Aspire 8943G Ethos (LX.PUG02.014)

Tech Radar reckon the Acer Aspire Ethos 8943G big screen laptop looks slick and is excellent for viewing in high-definition. It works brilliantly as a family media centre, with great speakers, a huge 1.2TB of storage and tonnes of other cool features. More powerful laptops can be bought for far less money but this high performance laptop will take you into the future with ease.

On the plus side, TechRadar complimented the Acer Aspire Ethos 8943G's fantastic screen, high build quality, 16 gigabytes of RAM, Core i7 chip and the built in Blu-ray drive. However, the reviewer noted that the laptop was expensive in terms of its performance, where it was somewhat lacking in comparison to the tester's expectations.

Product tested: Aspire 8943G Ethos (LX.PWC02.076)

The Aspire 8943G is expensive, but in CNet's opinion, its stunning performance, graphic power and crisp, full HD 18.4in screen make it well worth the £1000-plus price, especially for gamers and media lovers. Its battery life is nothing to write home about, but this is not a machine conceived for portability to begin with.

Register Hardware believe that Acer have done a grand job in producing the Ethos, saying it is attractive and a good performer. It is not cheap and many people will find the price tag a little extreme, but it includes a Blu-ray drive, large screen and a speedy processor and is in line with other 18.4in competitors. The Aspire Ethos 8943G is well worth a look if you want to swap your desktop and have the money to spend.

"very good" (5 out of 6 stars)

Value for money: "average" (3 out of 6 stars)

Product tested: Aspire 8943G Ethos (LX.PUG02.014)

The Ethos 8943G impressed PC Pro with its power and feature set. This is a very speedy machine that is fully equipped for entertainment including a Blu-ray player. There are some problems with the screen being overly reflective and the touchpad which is overly glossy. This machine is intended to be a desktop replacement but the price is very high for what is still a laptop.

Product tested: Aspire 8943G Ethos (Core i7, 12GB RAM, 2 x 640GB HDD)

"... the 12GB of RAM doesn't help system performance much and we find it hard to believe any home user would need so much memory. ... It has many good elements, but taken as a whole it fails to convince. Its unbalanced specification is largely at fault here, but there are several niggling faults that also undermine it. ... It has the features and no shortage of design flair, but the Acer Aspire Ethos 8943G is ultimately a bittersweet affair. It might make a better case for itself in cheaper configurations, but there are still fundamental issues to iron out."
