"Belkin Play Max review"
1 router (approx. £100)
PC Pro
Published on 8/2010
On test: Belkin Play Max
"When we reviewed Belkin's first concurrent dual-band router, the Double N+, we were impressed with its raw speed. The new Play Max range offers a similar feature set, adding an ADSL version to the mix (it's also available as a cable router around £20 less) with concurrent 300Mbits/sec 2.4GHz and 5GHz wireless connections, but instead of focusing on performance Belkin prefers to highlight the router's features." "Belkin Play Max ADSL Wireless Router review"
1 router (approx. £100)
Expert Reviews
Published on 7/2010
On test: Belkin Play Max
"Belkin's Play Max ADSL router is as feature-packed as they come, with simultaneous dual-band 2.4GHz and 5GHz wireless radios, Gigabit Ethernet, two ports for USB device sharing and a guest network. This is particularly impressive given that ADSL routers often have fewer features than their cable equivalents." Review details: Single test.    Test results
"D-Link DIR-685 review"
1 router (approx. £190)
PC Advisor
Published on 7/2010
On test: D-Link DIR-685 Xtreme N Storage Router
"Wireless routers are generally seen as boring devices that only serve to provide signal coverage for internet access throughout the house. But the latest 'storage router' from D-Link is quite a big exception, and an exciting one at that. Those who live in geek-land will be glad to see that the D-Link DIR-685 offers plenty of opportunities for tweaking and making full-use of the router long after its initial setup." Review details: Single test.    Test results

Routers

Routers connect computer systems to each other as well as to the Internet. There are different types of them according to the task to perform. The most straightforward type is the simple network router through which multiple computers are connected to each other. There are several standardized interfaces available for connection, so that depending on the device, up to four or sometimes even more computers can be connected. Routers that have an additional interface for connecting to the Internet are known as DSL routers. This saves computer users the need for a DSL card and allows them to have a robust firewall, since almost any modern router is equipped with firmware which can take over this function. If the DSL router has the added capacity to establish a wireless connection, it is called a WLAN router. Most of these routers can be combined in a router combo either over radio waves or via conventional cable. In order to access them, a computer must be equipped with specific WLAN accessories, such as an internal WLAN adapter or a WLAN USB stick. In order to run VoIP a VoIP router must be used – they control telephone connections over one or more auxiliary interfaces. This way, conventional telephones can make calls over an Internet connection, something for which the user would otherwise have needed special telephonic equipment. The most expensive routers usually include all the above features simultaneously, and depending on the mood of the manufacturer they are pitched as either WLAN or VoIP routers.
