The TEW-631BRP is a rather dull-looking Wi-Fi router, clad in Trendnet's trademark blue plastic. It might be a plain Jane, but it's nonetheless a well-specified device with some nice features.    More

D-Link jumped on the draft-802.11n merry-go-round a few months ago with its RangeBooster N650 router which offers a good range of features but ultimately failed to impress in the wireless performance stakes. The DSL-2740B represents its next stab at the high-speed networking market and adds an integrated ADSL 2/2+ modem and a few extra features to the mix.    More

Asus has traditionally steered clear of consumer NAS appliances and the WL-700gE represents its first stab at this market. However, it’s more than just a box with a hard disk inside as it combines a router, an integrated four-port Fast Ethernet switch, SPI firewall, wireless access point, web, media and FTP servers, a message board and even facilities for networking USB webcams and adding motion detection.    More

The Fritz is a serious bit of kit. Talk about squeezing a quart into a pint pot. Inside you'll find a conventional 54G Wi-Fi two-port router with firewall, plus a veritable raft of telephony features. It has an ISDN/analogue port for a PBX and features a trio of sockets for telephone handsets. It supports VoIP using Sips (software-based internet telephony), so that you can make phone calls via the internet or over a landline. Once registered, you can make free calls to other users or low-cost calls to landline numbers. And VoIP call clarity is acceptable.    More

"Thomson SpeedTouch 780WL - Wireless Router"

TrustedReviews

On test: Thomson Speedtouch 780WL
Aimed squarely at residential users, the latest 780WL finally brings support for VoIP into Thomson’s SpeedTouch range of broadband routers. Wireless connectivity is also on the menu but Thomson has stayed well clear of MIMO and the draft-n specification so the router only offers basic 54Mbps 802.11g operations. Along with an integral ADSL 2/2+ modem and four port Fast Ethernet switch you get a couple of RJ-11 ports that can be used to attach handsets or fax machines and the router also offers a standard PSTN backup port which is a requirement for calling emergency numbers. The router also has a single USB port but this is not for connecting external storage devices or printers but for directly linking one PC or notebook to provide it with Internet access.    More

When people talk about wi-fi they’re usually referring to the standards known as 802.11b and 802.11g that are used for wireless networking. There’s a new standard on the horizon; 802.11n is due out sometime next year and promises much faster wireless transfer speeds than the current 11Mbps (for 802.11b) and 54Mbps (for 802.11g).    More

There was a time when German communications company AVM had a fairly large presence in the UK market place as its expertise with ISDN put it ahead of much of the competition. However, it didn’t react quickly enough to BT’s wholesale pricing slaughter of its ISDN services at the end of the 90s and faded away over the ensuing years. Well, it’s back again and this time it’s thrusting itself at the broadband market with an ADSL router that looks to have more than a few tricks up its sleeve.    More

"Linksys Wireless-N Broadband Router"

Just when you thought the debacle surrounding the 802.11n draft wireless specification couldn’t get any worse it now looks like the wait for a final standard could extend into 2008. As our very own Gordon Kelly reported earlier this month not only did the working draft specification fail to get the required 75 per cent of votes to make it to the final draft stage but the huge number of comments that the IEEE will have to trawl through means it’s likely that a second draft won’t make an appearance until 2007. Irrespective of this fiasco no vendor in this market can afford to be left out and we now take a look at the latest draft-n router and PC Card from Linksys. Whereas the Netgear DG834N router stood out for its overall design, the WRT300N and its bizarre aerial cluster will generate more than a few tedious questions.    More

As I surmised with the review of Buffalo’s Nfiniti draft-n wireless products I felt it wouldn’t take long for the rest of the pack to catch up. Sure enough, D-Link is next onto the bandwagon with its latest Rangebooster router and PC Cards. Whereas Buffalo uses Broadcom’s Intensi-fi chipset, D-Link has opted for the XSPAN chipset, which is no surprise seeing as D-Link is one of Atheros’ biggest fans.    More

A few years back when mobile phones really had become commodity items I started asking a question that seemed mind numbingly obvious – why can’t I have a phone that uses a mobile network when I’m out and about, but functions as a landline phone when I’m at home? Unfortunately that question went unanswered, no matter how many network operators I talked to, or landline providers I quizzed. But as Dylan once said, the times they are a-changin’.    More
