4 out of 5 points
MacUser suggests that while the E-520 is a sensible enough upgrade to Olympus's previous cameras, it is not earth-shattering enough to force current owners to upgrade. For newcomers to DSLRs however, they suggest the camera is a good alternative and its small size could also make it perfect as a good backup to a full-frame camera.

"Good performance" (4 out of 5 stars) Value for money: 3 out of 5 stars
While Digital Photo magazine did not deny that te E-520 was a solid DSLR, the magazine felt it just did not ave enough going for it to compete successfully with its competition, or even with Olympus's own budget offerings.

"Highly Recommended" Value for money: 8.5 points out of 10
The camera's small size brings with it a disappointingly small viewfinder; even with the focus on its Live View implementation, Cameras.co.uk feels this is a failing. The magazine also suggests the camera may currently be priced a tad too high, especially with the current crop of high-performance budget DSLRs.

"excellent" (4 out of 5 stars) Value for money: 3 out of 5 stars
While the E-520 certainly has a lot going it such as in-camera Image Stabilisation, excellent image quality and an accomplished Live View system, Practical Photography wasn't sure it differed enough from Olympus's own E-420 to warrant the price hike. Considering the competition, the magazine felt the E-520 didn't stand out enough to warrant a wholehearted recommendation.

88% Value for money: 18 out of 20 points "Recommended"
The E-520 handles much better than most of its rivals. What digital Camera thought it was a camera worth taking a look at. Its image stabilisation and great value for money give it Recommended status.

87% Value for money: 18 out of 20 "Highly Recommended"
No major changes to its predecessor but Camera Labs were still happy to recommend it highly. The kit-lens was also a cut above the rest in terms of quality.

8 out of 10 points Value for money: 7 out of 10
By no means is this a major upgrade from the E-510. It is however a very respectable camera. Trusted Reviews does think that Olympus still has problems with controlling the noise of its cameras due to the smaller CCD sensor, but all-in-all, the E520 is a decent performer.
