What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision
Issue 5/2007
On test: Toshiba HD-XE1
High-definition discs, whether of the blu-ray or HD-DVD variety, have had a stuttering start. We've been lukewarm about both the dedicated Blu-ray players we've tested so far, and while both Sony's Blu-ray enabled PS3 and Toshiba's entry-level HD-E1 HD-DVD player fared better, neither is flawless. But fear not. DVD had much the same false dawn back in 1997: the first generation of players couldn't output DTS audio or play CD-R discs for example. Besides, the signs are that the second-gen players will correct many of those teething troubles. Toshiba's £650 HD-XE1 HD-DVD deck is a good start: here, at last, is a high-def disc player to get exited about. Review details: Single Test    Test results

On test: Teac DR-H300DAB
First things first: this isn't a perfect home cinema solution in one 21.5cm wide box - it's a good little stereo micro system that also plays DVDs, with upscaling to 720p/1080i. Review details: Single Test    Test results

At the beginning of the year I looked at Toshiba’s first European HD DVD player, the HD-E1. The HD-E1 proved to be a very impressive piece of kit, marketed at a bargain price, especially when compared to the competing Blu-ray products at the time. Unusually however, Toshiba chose to release its entry level player before its high end machine, but now I have the flagship HD-XE1 in my possession and it’s time to find out whether it’s worth the extra cash. After the big bang of the HD disc format war, the dust has settled a little. There are players available on both the Blu-ray and HD DVD sides and now manufacturers are expanding their product lines - adding a feature here and an enhancement there. Review details: Single Test    Test results

HD DVD certainly has a price advantage over Blu-ray: Toshiba's HD-E1 player is almost half the cost of Samsung's BD-P1000 Blu-ray player ... Unfortunately, the design and build quality feel similar to DVD players costing £200 less. Review details: Single Test    Test results

The world might be slowly bowing towards Blu-ray, but that hasn't stopped Toshiba releasing its second HD DVD player in the UK. This time it’s the company's flagship model, the HD-XE1. But is it any good? We take a closer look. Review details: Single Test    Test results

HD DVD players may be cheaper, but it's Blu-ray players that have had the upper-hand technically, thanks to their support for 1080p. Until now, that is. With the arrival of the Toshiba HD-XE1, the balance is restored. Review details: Single Test    Test results

Issue 2/2007
On test: Toshiba HD-E1
Back in December we tested the UK's first two Blu-ray machines, and were distinctively underwhelmed by the efforts of Panasonic and Samsung. These por first-generation machines leave the door open for HD-DVD to claim an early 'format was' edge, and with this machine it does so. Review details: Single Test    Test results

If you’re a movie buff you’ve probably been keeping a close eye on the next generation of optical formats. In fact the replacement for DVD has been a talking point for quite some time and now that both HD DVD and Blu-ray have officially hit the streets the amount of discussion is only set to increase. The most obvious question being asked is which format to go for, since no one wants to be left with redundant hardware and software. As always though, it’s the early adopters like me who will bite the bullet and buy into these new high definition formats. Why? Because we simply don’t have the patience to wait around and see how things pan out. When the first generation of Blu-ray players launched a couple of months back, the price tags were scary enough even to put off some early adopters. That said, I can remember first generation DVD players costing over £1,000 too. I was therefore surprised and a little sceptical when Toshiba told me that it planned to sell its HD DVD player for around half the price of the Blu-ray competitors. But sure enough, sitting under my TV right now is the HD-E1 – an HD DVD player with a recommended retail price of only £450. Review details: Single Test    Test results

Although the Xbox HD DVD drive add-on beat it to launch by a few weeks, the HD-E1 is to all intents and purposes the UK's first HD DVD player. Hook this up to a high-definition TV or projector and you'll be able to watch movies in 720p or 1080i format. Review details: Single Test    Test results
