The larger widescreen flat-panels might be getting more publicity these days, but there's definitely a place for a high-quality 19in screen.    More

When it comes to LCD monitors, to be honest there isn’t a great deal to differentiate between the various models once you get past the screen size and price tag. Unless you are LG, that is, who have taken the rather bold decision to stand out from the crowd.    More

While some brands that sell TVs are actually better known as PC monitor manufacturers - Viewsonic springs to mind, others such as LG are the other way round. For example, just recently LG’s [linkout:37LB1DB37LB1DB] did well in our TV section. In his opening comments John pointed out that Korea seems to have stolen a march over Japan when it comes to it to gorgeous design. LG is certainly on a role with great looking TVs, the distinctive ‘Chocolate’ phone and now this monitor.    More

It may seem too soon to write off the 20in Widescreen TFT, but the arrival of the low-cost 22in threatens to do just that. Although they offer the same 1,680 x 1,050 resolution as a 20in TFT, a number of manufacturers see 22in and the next big seller, and the prices are attractive in comparison. We saw Mirai's affordable DML-522W100 last month and now comes a slightly dearer alternative from Iiyama.    More

The sheer bulk of traditional CRT monitors meant there was always a practical limit on how large they could get. LCD flat-panels have a lot more room to expand.    More

Selling for just £14 less than the 20in Philips Brilliance 200W6CS/00 that currently tops our high-end flat-panels chart (see December issue, page 211), the 190P7ES faces a difficult job convincing you it's worth so much cash. After all, this screen measures just 19in.    More

AG Neovo's 17-inch and 19-inch P-Series monitors are an odd-looking pair. The black surround is a traditional enough, but the screens pivot on a stand that bulges out from the bottom. Although it won't win any beauty awards, it does have a certain style and contains a serious amount of technology, so don't write it off at the first glance.    More

"Iiyama ProLite E2200WS 22in Widescreen Monitor"

For those who have been around in the industry for some years the name Iiyama is evocative of quality monitors. I once visited its facilities in Stevenage and was impressed by its comprehensive testing set-up. Back in the late nineties, many of the best CRTs were from Iiyama and if a review PC came with a 17in VisionMaster Pro you knew it was off to a good start. When the industry started to shift away from CRT it was natural to expect that Iiyama’s reputation and expertise would make its way over to LCDs but somehow it didn’t happen for Iiyama. The focus was mostly on LCD TV rather than monitors, a venture that very nearly did for it in the UK. As you can see from its web site it’s now focussing on monitors again with only three models on show – two 19in models and the ProLite E2200WS – a new 22in widescreen model. However, it’s going down the flashy headline grabbing low response time route rather than talking about quality which worries me somewhat.    More

"Mirai DML-522W100 22in LCD monitor"

It used to be the case that for any given monitor size, you knew the resolution you would be getting. 17 and 19in gave you 1,280 x 1,024 and moving up to a 20 or 21in LCD display would get you to the heady heights of 1,600 x 1,200. However, since the world has gone widescreen, it’s got a little confusing. Most widescreen displays start at 20in and have a resolution of 1,680 x 1,050 and the next size up is 24in at 1,920 x 1,200. However, we’ve recently seen a 21in Samsung offering 1680 x 1050 and we’ve also seen a 19in widescreen from Asus with an awkward resolution of 1,440 x 900. If you’re an iMac fan you’ll also get this resolution on the 17in model.    More

"BenQ FP241W 24in Widescreen Monitor"

At the end of March I looked at the Samsung SyncMaster 244T and was amazed at how much it offered considering the price. At the time, finding a good 24in 1,920 x 1,200 monitor for around £800 was quite impressive, but it seems that things have moved on considerably since then. Sitting on my desk right now is the BenQ FP241W 24in monitor, which has even more tricks up its sleeve, while hitting a price point that makes the Samsung look expensive.    More
