Office notebooks meet the requirements for daily office work despite their low cost. Business laptops offer more security, better processing power and a high degree of mobility, similar to netbooks and subnotebooks. Multimedia notebooks with good graphics capabilities are intended for power users, while expensive outdoor notebooks are only for certain professional groups.

Notebooks can be classified according to their intended usage. The current crop of affordable laptops covers the needs of most customers. These so-called office notebooks are available for between 300 and 500 euros from HP and Asus and, with their 15-inch displays, make up the lion's share of the market. They can perform general office tasks as well as running light multimedia applications such as HD video. Small 10-inch netbooks are especially popular, since they are lightweight and usually have a long battery life, which justifies their purchase as a second or third machine. Since the introduction of the Intel Centrino processor, the laptop market shows a steady growth rate, while stationary PCs have lost more and more buyers. Even 17-/18-inch notebooks can easily replace a personal computer for 600€ and are often referred to as desktop replacements (DTR). The security applications of business laptops go hand in hand with good build quality, high reliability and long battery life to increase mobility. It's still the case that the only expensive subnotebooks you come across are those with business features; this is because these top-performing 13 to 14-inch devices are now being treated in exactly the same way as good multimedia notebooks - even by Apple. The multimedia segment, with its large 15-inch-and-above displays, covers all notebooks which sport a dedicated graphics card with its own memory and high definition sound. The multimedia capabilities of some of them even include 3D displays and shutter glasses. Such machines have particularly fast processors, lots of memory and powerful graphics cards. Features such as RAID hard disk arrays, SLI or Crossfire video card combinations and Blu-ray burners offer the comfort and performance of high-end PCs that would otherwise find their place under a desk. Outdoor notebooks occupy their own niche. They offer different kinds of protection against water, heat, cold, humidity, vibrations or drops for specific professions and applications. Panasonic is a world leader in this specific market segment, dividing its so-called Toughbooks in three groups according to their level of protection: Business-Ruggedized, Semi-Ruggidized and Fully-Ruggedized.
